A documentary film called Francesco is causing consternation in Catholic circles because it shows Pope Francis making several controversial statements. Among them,
“Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it. What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.”
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò says, “One does not have to be a theologian or a moral expert to know that such statements are totally heterodox and constitute a very serious cause of scandal for the faithful. … As Catholics, we are called to side with those who defend life, the natural family, and national sovereignty. We thought that we had the Vicar of Christ at our side. We painfully acknowledge that, in this epochal clash, he who ought to be guiding the Barque of Peter has chosen to side with the Enemy, in order to sink it.”
Bishop Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island says, “The Holy Father’s apparent support for the recognition of civil unions for same-sex couples needs to be clarified. The Pope’s statement clearly contradicts what has been the long-standing teaching of the Church about same-sex unions. The Church cannot support the acceptance of objectively immoral relationships. Individuals with same-sex attraction are beloved children of God and must have their personal human rights and civil rights recognized and protected by law. However, the legalization of their civil unions, which seek to simulate holy matrimony, is not admissible.”
Cardinal Müller says “Catholics are irritated” and the “enemies of the Church feel confirmed by the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ.” He reminds us that when there is a conflict between the words of a Pope and the Words of God, one has to choose God.
Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke says that “such declarations generate great bewilderment and cause confusion and error among Catholic faithful, inasmuch as they are contrary to the teaching of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and of the recent Magisterium by which the Church guards, protects and interprets the whole deposit of faith contained in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.”
Bishop Marian Eleganti, of Chur, Switzerland, says, “the papal interviews have become inflationary. … They give us personal views that are neither indisputable nor infallible.”

Because I am very public about the fact that I’m Catholic, I have always felt that it was extremely important that I limit any mention or discussion of my very limited dissent from Humanae Vitae to one-on-one discussions where I could clarify my nuanced position.
Given the great care I’ve taken to not give scandal on this issue, I am just BOGGLED at the fact that the pope himself has made statements again and again that are in conflict with doctrine. And Catholics who agree with his personal opinions cheer and pass his scandal off as no big deal.
