Doctors had only a four-hour window before the heart would become unusable, and every conventional option failed: no commercial flight was fast enough, no helicopter had the range, and no ground transport could cross multiple states in time. With the patient’s life slipping away, the medical team made an unprecedented request to the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force said yes.
