EVERYDAY HEROES: Tess adopted Atlas, a golden retriever who had flunked out of service dog school. For six years, Atlas never did any work except to carry in the mail. When Vince’s seizure was over and he could sit up, Atlas moved across his lap and stayed until the ambulance crew asked for room. Tess later called the school where Atlas had trained and learned that seizure response is taught in weeks 10 through 12. Atlas had had the top score in the class. He was flunked out during week 14, because he couldn’t bear to pass a stranger without stopping to say hey.
