All Saints Day

2A: A 36-year-old illegal alien from Colombia got thoroughly plastered, entered a Dollar General store in Polk County, Florida, pulled out a knife, threatened customers, and even stabbed a soda bottle for good measure. Two Florida residents pulled their guns out and held her until police arrived. I’m pleased to see the one in the photo was holding his firearm correctly and practicing good trigger discipline.

ALASKA: The DOJ has asked a federal judge to block Alaska from certifying its U.S. Senate election if Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan loses to Democrat Mary Peltola. Both state and federal criminal investigations are underway into an alleged scheme to place Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, Alaska, on the ballot to draw votes away from the incumbent, Senator Daniel S. Sullivan. The DOJ argues in its lawsuit that Daniel J. Sullivan was brought into the race “to confuse voters,” and that the sole purpose of his candidacy “is to benefit the Peltola campaign by reducing the number of votes for Senator Sullivan.”

CATHOLIC: Today is the second in a Catholic triduum of feasts that focus on death and life after death. All Hallows’ Eve calls us to prepare our hearts for the event each and every one of us will experience. All Saints’ Day shows us the glory we’re called to attain. And All Souls’ Day reminds us to pray for those who have died and are on their way to Heaven, but not there quite yet.

FDA: President Donald Trump recently established a women’s health task force and a new division at the health department focused on women’s health. One of its first actions is to remove out-dated “black box” warnings on Minivelle, Vivelle, and Vivelle-Dot patches, which provide menopausal women with estrogen.

Secretary Kennedy said, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are changing how the federal government approaches menopause care. We are updating labels to reflect current science, confronting barriers to treatment, and working with manufacturers to expand supply.”

FRAUD: The DOJ announced Thursday they have uncovered a multi-million dollar, Kenyan, student loan fraud ring. The Kenyans were stealing American identities, using the names to apply for student loans, and then sending the money back to Kenya. They weren’t here to assimilate. They were here to steal.

ILHAN OMAR: In an academic paper published in August, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi wrote, “As a gay man of the East African diaspora, my fieldwork was never neutral.” Elmi’s work, entitled “Out in the Field: Notes on Researching Queer Violence in Kenya,” explored violence against LGBTQ people in Kenya. Elmi is the man who married Ilhan Omar in 2009, after she divorced her baby daddy. She later divorced Elmi, who has long been rumored to be Omar’s biological brother, and remarried her baby daddy.

JOBS: Vote for more of this. You don’t get people out of poverty by giving them a hand-out. You get them out for creating jobs.

St. JOHN the APOSTLE: Among the Twelve Apostles, St. John the Evangelist stands alone in one striking way: no church or city claims to possess his body.

Early Christian witnesses—Polycrates of Ephesus, St. Irenaeus, and St. Jerome—agree that the Beloved Disciple returned from exile on Patmos, lived to an advanced age in Ephesus, and was buried there around the year 100.

A church later rose over the site, and Emperor Justinian eventually built a great basilica upon it. Yet when the tomb was opened in later centuries, it was empty. No bones, no relics. The place remains marked today among the ruins of the Basilica of St. John in Selçuk, near ancient Ephesus, but the body itself has never been found.

Local tradition, already known to St. Augustine and St. Gregory of Tours, held that John was not lying dead but sleeping in the earth until the Lord returns. Fine dust called “manna” was said to rise from the tomb as if stirred by his breath, and pilgrims gathered it for healing.

Other accounts speak of a quiet assumption into heaven, echoing the enigmatic words of Jesus in the Gospel: “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” (John 21:22–23). Unlike the other Apostles, whose remains were claimed and venerated across the Christian world, John’s body simply disappeared from ordinary sight.

The mystery has endured for centuries. Whether one reads it as a sign that the disciple Jesus loved still waits, or as a quiet fulfillment of the Lord’s promise, the empty tomb at Ephesus continues to invite reflection on the life that remains when the body is no longer seen.
