When I was (a lot) younger, I thought the seamless garment thing was beautiful. As I grew in age, wisdom, and beauty ;o), I began to see the worm in the apple.
Seamless garment theology replaces Jesus with Left-wing Social Justice.
Jesus came to proclaim the gospel of God. He called us to repent, and believe in Him, not to vote Democrat.
Within Catholic social teaching, there is a thing called the “hierarchy of truths.”
- Intrinsic evils are at the tippy top of the list.
- Affirmative obligations are lower down.
Seamless garment theology not only flips these around, but also gives priority to addressing affirmative obligations IN THE WAY THE LEFT PRESCRIBES.
Intrinsically Evil Acts — like abortion and euthanasia — can never be performed under any circumstances. It is a serious sin to deliberately endorse or promote any of these actions.
Affirmative Obligations — like relieving poverty — seek the common good. We should look to the Church’s rich history of social teaching and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in how we individually and collectively meet these challenges.
There’s no question that unemployment, poverty, homelessness, etc. pose serious threats to the dignity of human beings. Nevertheless, they are neither intrinsic evils nor subject to the simplistic so-called solutions the Left pushes on us.
