PoliNation Update: Chrissy Not Quite Out of the Woods Yet

The master of Casa de Hyphen checked in yesterday and today to update us on Chrissy’s condition and pass along a message from her.  She’s still too weak to write, but she’s been making progress off and on over the last week or so.  Yesterday was a bit of a brief setback, but today was better.  As we menfolk talked about an hour ago, Chrissy was apparently sleeping peacefully.

However, there’s still a fair amount of pain and difficulty, and yesterday, Chrissy specifically asked her husband to call and ask us for additional prayers.  She also thanked us for the many prayers on her behalf lately, and she emphasized that they’ve been a great comfort to her.

I’ve been mostly praying privately, but today, Gruntessa was able to go to adoration at our parish in Foxfield, Colorado (snapshot below) and say a rosary before the Blessed Sacrament for Chrissy.  We’ve not forgotten you, Dear!  Be well and be at peace, Chrissy.

“13 Hours” Opened Thursday Night. Why Haven’t You Seen it Yet?

Movie review guest post by Mike at the Proof-Positive Blog.

k9yn1f

13 Hours, as most of you know, is the true story of a handful of individuals who showed uncommon bravery in the face of a colossal security clusterflock*, at a US diplomatic outpost, after the fall of Qaddafi in Libya. The movie doesn’t go into the politics, most of which consisted in the (almost?) criminal refusal on behalf of the State Department to provide adequate security to, as the opening credits note, one of the twelve most dangerous spots on the planet.

If you listen closely, you can hear the faint voice of Barack Obama blathering about the wonderful opportunities for the Libyan people now that Qaddafi had been overthrown. Mercifully, I did not see any pictures of Hillary or hear the dreaded cackle, which, now that I think of it, might have sent their attackers fleeing in fear at the sound of it.

The story starts with the arrival of Jack Silva, played by The Office’s John Krasinski**. A tense and potentially deadly situation arises on the streets of Benghazi before they can even reach the compound. Welcome to Benghazi! Jack is not an FNG***, as he has worked with some of the team in years past.

The CIA station chief “Bob”, is portrayed as a snot nosed, condescending, officious prick who treats his security detail, mostly former Navy SEALS, as rent-a-cops. Not surprisingly, the former CIA station chief for Benghazi has said this is all ‘baloney’, but then, if even a fraction of it were true, I would vehemently deny it, too. Whose word are you going to trust? His, or the three men who risked their lives to save his bacon? Me, too.

The movie shows the very human side of these operators: interactions with their wives and kids, albeit long distance, the boredom, the bureaucracy, and when the balloon goes up, their professionalism and willingness to die for their friends and even some complete strangers, because that’s what they signed up for.

The movie is well paced and suspenseful, and at times, like “24”, gives the sense of taking place in real time. The suspense is heightened in that the bad guys do not wear any uniform or insignia and therefore look like anyone else. These men know all too well the consequences of shooting a “friendly”, therefore you literally cannot tell friend from foe until they start shooting at you.

The battle scenes are intense and the down time in between them are very revealing of these men’s character. The requests for help that go unanswered, surprising in the face of the number of people actually ready to respond, may cause one to pause.

I highly recommend this movie. The movie is accurate, according to (most of) those who were there. Director Michael Bay does the script, the story, and the heroes behind them justice. One caveat, you may not be able to leave the theater with a dry eye. Two ladies who saw the movie before I did, Tweeted: There was only one word when we left the theater: Speechless.

Five out of five stars.

*Hey! We are still PG-13 here! But if that kind of language offends you, wait until 13 Hours comes out on network TV, and read the book while you wait. The language is not excessive, but realistic.
**Don’t let that concern you. I was never a fan of The Office, but his acting is first rate here. He gives a very credible performance, showing wide range.
***F’ing New Guy, for the uninitiated.

Update by Grunt:  Sean Smith’s mother could not review this movie because she was too emotional about it.  To see her comments about Hillary Clinton after attempting to sit through the movie, watch this video: (Hat tip: Common Cents.)

Pizza Wars

One of the unpleasant side-effects of the ridiculous stink about Ted Cruz’ “New York values” comment has been the dredging up of the old fight about whose pizza is better, New York or Chicago or <fill in home town>.

Pizza1

But the best part about it was hearing Dana Perino shut everybody down on the Fox show, The Five, today, when she made it clear that the only good pizza in the whole country is the mountain pizza found in Colorado, originally just in Idaho Springs, where it is still enjoyed by grateful skiers and locals alike on the main route between Denver and the Summit County ski areas.  It’s called Beau Jo’s Pizza.  Ms. Perino would know, because she is from Parker, Colorado, that place where my butt is parked at this very moment.  And she’s absolutely right.

Besides, judging from how thin-skinned New Yorkers are about the deal, and how quick idiots like Geraldo are to call racism over it, and also how basically nothing good can possibly come from Rahm Emanual’s town, just about anybody’s home town can claim bragging rights on this one.  But here, Dana gets my vote.

Christmas Update on Blogger Freedom1781’s Husband’s Injuries

Back in November, I wrote here and at my blog about one of our blogger friends whose husband needed prayers after a tragic and life-threatening fall.  He had been helping a neighbor on a high roof under wet conditions and slid off with such speed that he destroyed their safety measures on the way down, sustaining critical injuries to his spine, pelvis and one arm.

Many people commented that they would pray for Freedom1781’s husband, and I’m happy to report very good news.  He not only has made great progress in his recovery, but he reports tremendous encouragement and gratitude for your prayers.  He also claims that he’s been aware of many apparently miraculous developments which have helped him on the very difficult road to recovery.  He attributes these to the prayers of family and friends, and he insists that I pass along his thanks to those of you who have prayed for him.  So, thanks to YOU!

Gruntessa and I had the chance in early December to visit their family, since I work frequently in coastal Virginia, where they live.  At that time, he had just been released from the hospital from the first round of surgeries and rehabilitation.  He was in a lot of pain, but he also was suffering from severe cabin fever, so he desperately wanted to visit the Busch Garden’s Christmas Town in Williamsburg with his young daughter and wife.  He could get around in a wheelchair with a lot of help, so we made it happen, and he managed to make it through an entire loop of all the world villages decorated with 8 million lights for Christmas.

One of the highlights of the tour was attending the show, Gloria!, which is a musical stage act of the nativity of Christ.  If you’ve never been, the Busch family still puts on a very Christ-centered Christmas celebration without any political correctness within a few hundred miles of Washington, DC, and that is quite an amazing thing!

Christmas Town

But the best news came just this week, when we found out that Mr. Freedom1781’s hip socket was growing back well enough that the next surgery would attempt a reconstruction rather than a total hip replacement.  The replacement was originally thought necessary because this was a traumatic injury in which his femur punched completely through his pelvis on impact, destroying the joint.  But now, there is hope for a near total recovery.  Thanks for the prayers, Folks!

The Wages of Stupidity

2014122707putin-pThat would be: Humiliation and Death, in that order.  Let’s not be naive, America.  We will get both those things, in our turn, as the direct result of our stupidity in bringing our current leadership to power.  Right now, Europe and Syria are experiencing most of the death, but our fate has already been sealed.

Today marked a huge step forward in that direction.  We already have enough ISIS sympathizers who hate America within the borders of our country to guarantee that more of our buildings will fall and more blood will be spilt on our soil by “Allahu Akbar”-shouting retards.  We are already in a de facto war with China – one made worse every day as our President sends B-52s (of all things, the planes that deliver nuclear ordnance) over China’s man-made islands for some inscrutable reason or no reason at all.  We will soon find ourselves in a not-so-cold war with Russia because of our insane actions in the Middle East.  Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge points out why today’s events are much more than a conflict between Moscow and Ankara:

So just to be clear on what’s happened here in case the gravity of the situation is somehow lost on anyone, a NATO member from whose airbase the US is flying combat missions, just shot down a Russian fighter jet and the US-backed, al-Qaeda aligned FSA has released not one, but two videos depicting their fighters dancing over the body of a dead Russian pilot while shouting “Allahu Akbar” and holding up the “we’re number one” hand signal.

But that’s not all.  Mere hours from when these disgusting videos were released by our “allies” and probably viewed repeatedly by Putin until he could shoot blood out of his eyes, Syrian rebels shot down a Russian helicopter using a US-made missile that we gave them.

Meanwhile the man who has got us into this mess is crowing about going forward with a climate change summit in Paris, as if that will save the world.  He should probably pay some attention to those who are calling today a Sarajevo Moment of the Next World War.  We have more to fear now than just pegging the absurdity meter in our national dialogue.  We have wages to collect, Brothers and Sisters.  Not because we’re evil.  We’re not.  It’s because we’re stupid.

Prayer Request for Blogger Down

BloggerDown
Freedom1781 has been a familiar conservative blogger and patriot for most of the Age of Obama, starting out at HillBuzz and then migrating to Motley’s HoneyTrail and the Conservative Treehouse, then to For God, Family & Country and most recently PoliNation and other forums. She is fine, but her husband just recently sustained life-threatening injuries. He’s a good man I’ve met on several occasions, and he’s not just a proud patriot, but he’s a direct descendent of American revolutionary war heroes.

ad39f320ee1b0115f60483a7f081ced9Unfortunately, that “white privilege” didn’t keep him from working outside under dangerous conditions a few weeks ago and taking a long fall that crushed his spine and pelvis and one of his arms. After some reconstruction, he faces a long road to rehabilitation, and he has a wife and young daughter who face a lot of heartache and difficulty. She asks for prayers. God bless these good people.

Critics Put In a ‘Tired’, ‘Unimaginative’ and ‘Disappointing’ Performance in their Lackluster Reviews of the New Bond Film, ‘Spectre’

Daniel-Craig-Leaving-James-Bond
It used to be that mostly left-leaning movie critics could be counted on to put some effort into the way they showed their venomous distain for the assorted conservative, manly themes that continue to feature in James Bond films, including the latest one. But this time they’re really phoning it in. They seem to hate Spectre more than usual, but they can’t seem to express it very coherently or concisely. RogerEbert.com reviewer Matt Seitz wrote what seemed to me about 30 pages of rambling despondency that made me wonder if I should call the suicide hotline in Los Angeles on his behalf. Vox.com lived up to its creative potential and simply wrote the headline: “Spectre is the Worst James Bond Movie in Years.” Read the whole review and it’s not much more specific than that, but one doesn’t read Vox for the intellectual spectacle.
