The rights of the unborn

Michigan is one of 38 states that recognize preborn children as homicide victims. Twenty-three of those states extend that recognition to the beginning of pregnancy.

Allegan County [Michigan] Circuit Court Judge Kevin W. Cronin extended the sentence of a man who was convicted of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend because he recognized the preborn child as a second victim.

In May 2014, Samuel Demetrious Ambrose received a minimum of four years for punching his pregnant girlfriend, who was also disabled, and dumping her out of her wheelchair into a ditch, then holding her head underwater. Cronin handed down a sentence three months longer than the recommended guidelines of a crime of this nature. Appeals Court Judge Peter D. O’Connell wrote that Ambrose placed both mother and preborn child “in both danger of death and physical injury.’’

Ambrose was convicted on separate counts of felonious assault and witness tampering and was sentenced to serve his punishment for them consecutively rather than simultaneously, maximizing his time in jail.

For the first time, scientists have captured the explosion of tiny sparks that erupts from the egg at the exact moment of conception.

CtH: I think this gives credence to the only theory re: how the image on the Turin Shroud was made that ever seemed plausible to me.  It speculates that at the moment Jesus resurrected into His now glorified, eternal body, there was a huge release of energy that marked the cloth.

The majority of our young people are Abortion Abolitionists!

Back in the 1990s, the 18-29-year-olds were the age group most supportive of unrestricted legal abortion. Nowadays, this group is more Pro-Life than their parents’ age group (30-49), though not as Pro-Life as their grandparents’ age group (50-64).

  • 2003: A Gallup poll found 79% of Americans between the ages of 13 and 17 believe abortion should be illegal or limited to only the rare rape-incest-life of mother exceptions.
  • 2008: A New York Times, CBS News, MTV sponsored poll found that 62% of Americans under 30 said abortion should be illegal or limited to only the rare rape-incest-life of mother exceptions.

Personally, I’m a almost-no-exceptions person on this issue.

LIFE: I know there are situations in which a pregnancy poses a clear and present danger to the mother’s life.  In those situations, I believe the OB/GYN should treat both patients aggressively, not just kill off the one who has no say in the matter.  I would support legal termination ONLY where the possibility of a live birth is NIL (ectopic pregnancy, for example).

RAPE: Two wrongs don’t make a right.Where else does anyone think that killing an innocent bystander/witness to a crime is justified or would/could/should make the victim of that crime feel better? And who supports killing the rapist himself? Anyone?

The only major study of pregnant rape victims ever done found that 75-85% of women who conceived as a result of rape chose life. I’ve also read personal testimony by women who regret choosing to abort for this reason. The most compelling quotation by a woman explained why she was having a harder time recovering from the abortion than from the rape. “I was a victim of the rapist, but I chose to kill my child.”

INCEST: Abortionfacts.com writes:

The case against abortion of incest pregnancies is even stronger. Studies show that incest victims rarely ever voluntarily agree to an abortion. Instead of viewing the pregnancy as unwanted, the incest victim is more likely to see the pregnancy as a way out of the incestuous relationship because the birth of her child will expose the sexual activity. She is also likely to see in her pregnancy the hope of bearing a child with whom she can establish a true loving relationship, one far different than the exploitive relationship in which she has been trapped.

But while the incest victim may treasure her pregnancy because it offers her hope of release, and the hope of finding a nurturing love, her pregnancy is a threat to the exploiter. It is also a threat to the pathological secrecy which may envelop other members of the family who are afraid to acknowledge that the abuse is occurring. Because of this dual threat, the victim may be coerced into an unwanted abortion by both the abuser and other family members.

For example, Edith Young, a 12-year-old victim of incest impregnated by her stepfather, writes twenty-five years after the abortion of her child: “Throughout the years I have been depressed, suicidal, furious, outraged, lonely, and have felt a sense of loss… The abortion which was to ‘be in my best interest’ just has not been. As far as I can tell, it only ‘saved their reputations,’ ‘solved their problems,’ and ‘allowed their lives to go merrily on.’… My daughter, how I miss her so. I miss her regardless of the reason for her conception.”

Angels Working Overtime

This is such an inspiring story.  This woman made NINE appointments to abort her baby.  Every one fell through!  I’m thinking angels. 🙂

She finally got so frustrated, she went to a life affirming, faith-based pregnancy resource center that offered her a free ultrasound to help her in making her pregnancy decision.

The moment she saw her baby on the screen, she made the decision to do whatever she could to save the life of her child.

Ted Cruz: Congress needs to protect the unborn

Last December, Princeton Professor Robert George interviewed Senator Ted Cruz, who argued that unborn babies are PERSONS within the meaning of the 14th Amendment, ERGO they have a right to life under the nation’s founding document.  Moreover, the 5th section of the 14th Amendment calls specifically on Congress to enforce this in the law.

Below is a partial transcript of the section of the interview that begins at 9:34.  This whole interview is well worth your time.  IMHO, there is no other Republican presidential candidate that deserves my vote.

CANDIDATE CONVERSATIONS 2016 WITH ROBERT GEORGE – 2015-11-25

   GEORGE: Ted, the Fourteenth Amendment says that no state shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Now, the amendment in its fifth section includes a provision that delegates to the Congress the power, and I quote, to enforce by appropriate legislation the provisions of this article.

CRUZ: Yep.

GEORGE: Now, do you believe that unborn babies are persons within the meaning of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and if so will you call on Congress to use its authority under the Fourteenth Amendment, pursuant to Section 5, to protect the unborn? Or do you take the view, as some do, that we can’t do that until Roe v. Wade is overturned, either by the court itself or by constitutional amendment? Where do you stand on that?

CRUZ: Listen, absolutely yes. I think the first obligation of everyone in public office is to protect life. Life is foundational. In fact, as you look at the Declaration, that ordering of unalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, I think it’s a very deliberate ordering. Without life there is no liberty, and without liberty there is no pursuit of happiness. That each builds upon the other, and I very much agree with the Pope’s longstanding, and prior popes before him, longstanding call to protect every human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death.

GEORGE: And we can do that with congressional action without waiting for Roe v. Wade being overturned?

CRUZ:  Absolutely yes.
