I had an interesting encounter this morning. My Mexican immigrant, middle-aged, broken-English speaking pool guy just had a 5 minute conversation with me about just how badly Obama has screwed up everything. And how we need jobs. And how he’s done nothing but make things worse. And how the government is killing small business owners with taxes, but mostly endless regulations and fees and requirements. “You cannot make a business now. Is too hard.”
He talked about loving America, and how this was always the place where you could come and make a better life for your family, and how we are losing that. That there is no pride. That we are tearing down the things that made us a great country, different from Europe or anywhere else. He just got back from a trip to Mexico for a family funeral, and he said “everyone is laughing at us, other countries are laughing at us.”
And then he says (and this blew my mind, because we’ve chatted before and he is NOT a Republican – I think he even voted for Obama) – “You know what we need? We need someone like Reegan (yeah, that’s how he pronounces it) He was a good president. He did some stupid stuff, but he was strong. (He did a quick muscle pose at that), Even if he was strong, but he still did not go do all these wars. You know? It was good. Nobody laughed. There were jobs then, people have their businesses, and people believe in America then.”
It really struck me, because more so than just being disgusted with policy, it was evident in his voice and mannerisms that he really loves this country, unapologetically thinks it’s the greatest country in the world, and ought to fight to remain unique and exceptional. And he seemed genuinely saddened and puzzled that the people currently running it don’t seem to feel that way.
