If I had any money, I’d consider investing it in companies that make antidepressants. The demand for them is gonna skyrocket when the food stamp president loses the election. (Or maybe I’d invest in champagne, sales of which will also skyrocket when the food stamp president loses the election.)

It is not the history I was taught, and it is revisionist P.C., yet the truth of it is what makes it funny. The children’s version was, the world was flat until Columbus proved it was round, or something. The adult version is, nobody had tried to do what he did, because everyone knew the world was round, and mariners and other scientists of the day knew just about exactly how far it would be from Europe sailing west to Asia. That’s why nobody tried it. Ol’ Chris C. was bad at math, his sponsors were no better, or else they just wanted to get rid of him, and he and his crew would have been dead at sea had it not been for one of history’s most consequential accidents, there just happened to be an entire other hemisphere that he bumped into.
Columbus died without ever knowing he hadn’t made it to Asia.
This is a big holiday in Chicago’s Italian American Community. A few years ago, one of my young cousins was queen so the the whole familia, went downtown to cheer her on. During the whole parade, we had to listen to a barrage of “indian” activists, beating drums and calling Columbus a murderer and demanding an end to this celebration.
After that, I lost all empathy for the native American cause.
Happy Columbus day to my fellow Italian Americans, and Americans of every background who are glad he was a lousy navigator.
Now I just wish all these activists could get lost.
Reminds me of something I just learned in a documentary about Israel. The nation that is now a model of democracy and prosperity was a medieval wasteland until the Jews took over. All those whiney Palestinians who never lived there, but refuse to move on and get a life somewhere else … THEIR ancestors didn’t do diddly to develop that land. So what they’re demanding is to steal from Israelis what Israelis built.
I also recall hearing a black soldier say once that he’d been to the land of his forefathers and was deeply grateful somebody kidnapped his own ancestors, so he didn’t end up living in such a backwards, third world armpit.
I don’t think there’s any country on earth where it’s better to be a black person than in the United States. I always wish I could ask black Americans one question: If you were given the power to rewrite history, would you go back and undo slavery if that meant that you would have been born in Africa rather than in the United States? There are all kinds of black Africans emigrating (or trying to emigrate) to the U.S., but when was the last time you heard of a black American emigrating to Uganda or Somalia or any of the other hellholes on that continent?
This is an obvious graphic, and surely not the first entry in this meme, but I haven’t seen it yet, late to the starting gate as this is in the fast-pace political-mockery world. If I can’t be first, at least I can be next. 😀
