They’re going to pull the debt trigger soon. And blame Republicans of course. When they stop threatening and actually do refuse to cut checks for the 50%+ of Americans who depend on federal moneys, it’ll make October 2008 look mild by comparison. I just hope and pray none of my kids are called on to aim weapons at fellow citizens.

The truth is that we exceeded the Debt Limit on March 19th. They have been playing shell games ever since.
I may (if I find the time) write up a post about this, but here are some of the facts…
Statutory Debt Limit: $16,699,421,000,000
On February 4th, Obama signed a bill to temporarily suspend the Debt Limit until May 18th.
On Tuesday, March 19, 2013, the Total Public Debt Subject to Limit hit $16,710,017,000,000
(along with a message: “* Act of February 4, 2013 temporarily suspended the debt limit through May 18, 2013.”)
They have played shell games with “Extraordinary measures” to borrow from areas that are not subject to the debt limit (but still has to be repaid!) and bring the debt the total debt subject to the limit down to $25 Million under the statuatory debt limit and hold it there.
The debt clock is stuck.

Note the “flat line” back in January 2013 the last time we were having debt ceiling issues/discussions.
And note how as soon as the issue passed and the flatline ended, the debt shot back up to where it would have been anyway.
I.E., put a ruler up to the graph and see how the line from 11/1/12 to 1/1/13 meets back up with the data point on 3/1/13. The “flat line” and data point at 2/1/13 is a farce… a shell game where the “total debt” is kept ficticiously steady because they aren’t counting the borrowing going on as part of the “extraordinary measures”. But as soon as the limit is raised, the “extraordinary measures” are repaid and the debt shoots right back up to where it really is.
And note how an extension of that slope shows that our real total debt right now is well over $17 Trillion.
My estimate is that the true total debt is roughly $17.2 Trillion right now.
