Yes, but most are small enough they vaporize nicely. This one was 2500 lb and had about 500 lb that was expected to hit the ground or ocean. GOCE probably made smoking holes in the snow in Antarctica, but there was a chance it dropped a few chunks on Cuba or maybe on Ting’s place in Virginia before it all came down.

Or this … the principle purpose of that GOCE satellite was to make maps of the variation in the pull of gravity across the Earth.
I didn’t know gravity varied from place to place. Two new factoids and I haven’t even had my second cuppa!
