Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

PRAYER of St. FRANCIS: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

EVERYDAY HEROES: “While waiting to board our plane, my daughter was being her usual inquisitive self wanting to meet and say ‘hi’ to everyone she could, until she walked up on this man.

“He reached out and asked if she wanted to sit with him. He pulled out his tablet and showed her how to draw with it, they watched cartoons together, and she offered him snacks.

“This wasn’t a short little exchange, this was 45 minutes. Watching them in that moment, I couldn’t help but think, different genders, different races, different generations, and the best of friends. This is the world I want for her.

“In a country that is continuously fed that it’s so deeply divided, I want her life to be filled with moments like this.

“Joseph, thank you for showing my daughter what kindness and compassion looks like. Continue to shine your light in the world.”

  1. Long ago, sometime last century, MiladyJo and I bought her (late, sainted, devout Catholic) mother a St Francis statue. About four feet high, out of some kind of poured stone. Standing there with his bowl out. Was in her back yard for a long time, then in her apartment.

    After her death, we somehow brought it back here, where it has been on the front porch of the old house ever since. Keep meaning to set it out in the yard, but need to make a base for it. And fill the bowl with bird seed, for the squirrels.

    Many times we’ve had a critter run off, and I’ve gone over to the statue, touched the bowl, and asked for the critter’s safe return. Most often, we were rewarded with the critter restored.

    Being merely raised Episcopal (old tradition) and an unchurched “independent” believer, I’m not big on appeals to saints, much less statues, but I have much respect for St Frank (and that nice prayer), and appreciate any help where taking care of the pets is concerned!

    Still working on that St. Anthony search for a missing file cabinet key…

      Ask your guardian angel to show you where that key is. He is with you at all times and has perfect recall. 🙂

        Yeah, good idea, but what if someone else moved the key? -heh-

        I always presume my appeals are heard from the lowest to the highest levels — regardless of the reply!

          Given how often people (well, Catholics mostly LOL) bug St. Anthony, I’m guessing he has deputized guardian angels to do the actual finding and notifying. ❤

          Also, Father Ripperger says that when an angel turns its attention to something, it instantly knows everything. So if someone moved the key, he’ll know. 🙂
