The Pope Emeritus Responds to an Atheist

In 2011, Italian atheist, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, published a book called Dear Pope, I am Writing to You, in which he criticized some of Pope Benedict’s writings.

Benedict recently published his response, which he says was delayed because of his duties and his desire to actually read the book before commenting.

He begins with, “Thank you for the faithful manner in which you dealt with my text, earnestly seeking to do it justice.” But then he says,

“My opinion of your book as a whole, however, is rather mixed. I read some parts of it with enjoyment and profit. In other parts, however, I was surprised by a certain aggressiveness and rashness of argumentation. I would like to respond chapter by chapter, but unfortunately I do not have sufficient strength for this. I shall therefore choose a few points that I think are particularly important.”

I’ve included a link below to the English translation.  I found it too difficult to read on my monitor, so created a printable document in Word, so I can give it some first morning brain cells tomorrow. It’s 8½ pages.

To whet your appetite, here are an excerpt on the relationship between faith and reason:

“An important function of theology is to keep religion tied to reason and reason to religion. Both roles are of essential importance for humanity. In my dialogue with Habermas, I have shown that there are pathologies of religion and — no less dangerous — pathologies of reason. They both need each other, and keeping them constantly connected is an important task of theology.”

And another on the Church as a sign of goodness and beauty, despite the evils that afflict it:

“If we may not remain silent about evil in the Church, then neither should we keep silent about the great shining path of goodness and purity which the Christian faith has traced out over the course of the centuries.”

US Bishops Vow to Not Obey Obama’s HHS Mandate

If they’d been less eager to have “easy” government funding for Catholic hospitals, maybe ZeroCare would never have gotten off the ground.

I’m glad they finally opened their eyes, but criminetly … the folks in Pro-Life were telling them for YEARS that nationalizing health care was a guaranteed road to forcing every American to finance abortion.

We told them and told them and told them, but they just patted us on the head and said we were being silly, cuz that wouldn’t happen in the United States of America. Yeah.

They said the same kind of thing in Germany. And Cuba.

I believe the fundamental sin here was that they looked to government rather than to God to finance their good works and He’s let it bite them on the butt to teach them a lesson.

Pope Francis bans Bishop of Bling

Bishop of Bling

Oct 23, 2013: The Vatican announced that Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, the bishop of Limburg, “could no longer exercise his episcopal ministry” while an inquiry into his allegedly free spending gets under way.

The “Bishop of Bling” reportedly spent $42.76 million on his new diocesan headquarters, ten times the original estimate. Extravagances reportedly included $19,440 on a bathtub, $477,840 on built-in cupboards and carpentry, $1,077,170 on the garden and $615,520 on art works.

Jerry Brown said NO to Left Wingnuts!

Governor Jerry Brown of California is definitely a liberal. But he’s not afraid to occasionally go against the grain of the left wing of his party.

In 2002, California lawmakers wisely expanded the statute of limitation for sex abuse victims and the Catholic Church approved.

But the Church opposed a recent bill that would have eliminated the statute of limitations on sexual crimes committed against minors … but only for private institutions.

The bill exempted public schools and other government institutions and Governor Brown was correct to veto it.

If you are interested at all in what I think about Mary

Here’s the short version:

  • God chose Mary to be the mother of His Only Son, Jesus.
  • Jesus is my brother, which makes Mary my mother too.
  • God carved “Honor thy mother” on to Moses’ stone tablets.

Here’s the long version:

Catholic doctrine makes a sharp distinction between “latria” (the worship given to God alone) and “dulia” (the veneration or respect paid to the saints and angels as the servants and friends of God).

“Hyperdulia” is the veneration offered to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Extra dulia. Super duper dulia. But NOT latria. Not EVER.

My kids understood this in elementary school when they were assaulted by little Protestant boys for “worshiping” Mary. It became obvious when I spoke to the moms that it was 99% BOYS (who happened to be Protestant) teasing GIRLS (who happened to be Catholic) … but still. Those boys didn’t come up with the idea that “Catholics worship Mary” all on their own.

Catholic teaching is crystal clear on the matter. We do NOT worship Mary. Period.

Do some Catholics go overboard with their Marian devotions? Yeah. Some. But it’s really rare, especially these days. Try and find yourself a Catholic who even knows the rosary is a meditation about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, never mind one who knows the Mysteries by heart or … oh my goodness …. ever actually says a rosary. It’s pathetic.

What is the rosary? http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/devotionals/rosaries/how-to-pray-the-rosary.cfm

Rosary

Where does this idea even come from that God doesn’t like it when we pay attention to His mom?!

Does anybody honestly think when we love on our significant others that Jesus grumbles because we’re not paying 100% attention to Him and Him alone?

How much more is God not displeased by the attention Catholics pay to the woman He chose to grow, birth, suckle, nurture, instruct and stand by Jesus?

Jesus is the only reason Mary is special; honoring her glorifies Him.

Plus, no matter how much attention we pay her, she ALWAYS directs our attention to Him.

Always.

October 13th

We didn’t know Oct 13 was special when we picked our wedding date. We just wanted to enjoy the fall foliage on our honeymoon trip through New England and the best guess dates six months ahead of the season were the two middle Saturdays in October, the 13th and the 20th of 1979.

My family has a special attachment to the number 13, because my brothers wore it for their sports jerseys. One of them was such a super-star, his league retired his number. When he and his fiancée were planning their nuptials, he told her he didn’t care about anything except that she pick a 13th, so he’d be able to remember their anniversary! LOL So they married on Sept 13th, just two weeks into his first semester of graduate school!

So, really … it’s because of my brothers that I voted for the 13th and Dearest didn’t care, so that was that. It was only years after our wedding that we learned about Our Lady of Fatima and were so thrilled to realize our wedding anniversary was on the same date as the Miracle of the Sun.

October 13, 1917: The Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, Portugal, was seen by tens of thousands of witnesses of all ages and dispositions, including newspaper reporters hostile to the Catholic Church who took photos and interviewed many who also witnessed extraordinary solar activity. According to these reports, the event lasted approximately ten minutes. Pope Pius XII himself said he saw it from the Vatican gardens. The event was officially accepted as a miracle by the Roman Catholic Church on October 13, 1930.

Yesterday, in addition to standing with the Million Vets March at our local war memorial, we also celebrated the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Senate FINALLY votes on volunteer chaplains

2013_10 06 Senate blocks military masses

LAST Saturday, the House passed (400-1) a bill to allow contract chaplains to volunteer without reprisal on military bases during the shut-down.

The Senate refused to take up the bill until late THIS Thursday and only then because voters YAPPED at them all week to get their thumbs out. The bill passed unanimously, so the civilian chaplains who fill in the gaps for soldiers without uniformed chaplains available will have services this week-end.

Take note here, folks.

This bill did not involve any MONEY. It was merely about giving these “non-essential” (and part-time) government employees PERMISSION to tend to their flocks WITHOUT REPRISAL. The law about fines and arrests for furloughed gov’t employees voluntarily doing their jobs anyway dates back to the 19th c. It’s got nothing to do with Obama Democrats.

Obama Democrats were just the schmucks who refused to WAIVE this law for the specific benefit of troops who do not have access to a chaplain of their denomination.

This mostly affects Catholics. About 25% of the military is Catholic, but less than 10% of the military chaplains are priests. I heard stories about Catholics serving in uniform whose scheduled baptisms and weddings were affected by this petty Democrat intransigence.

Obama attack on religion is SOP

Obama violates religious freedom

A year ago, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a “preventive services” regulation under Obamacare. This regulation requires almost all health care plans to cover, without fees or co-pay, sterilizations, artificial contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs.

The U.S. Catholic bishops have unanimously condemned this regulation. Calling it “illegal and unjust”, the bishops have encouraged all American Catholics to disobey it.

In October of 2012, the Catholic Kennedy family that owns Autocam sued the government over this issue.

Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit ruled against them, saying the sole owners’ First Amendment rights don’t count, because “the mandate falls on Autocam.”

It does not matter to the court that the Kennedys are the sole owners of Autocom or that they are great bosses to their 661 employees, precisely because they live their Catholic-Christian faith in every aspect of their business.

The Kennedys intend to appeal their case to the Supreme Court.

It’s A-OKAY to diss Catholics

The Lefty Tolerance and Civility Police have a long list of Politically Incorrect words, phrases and actions … but there is one minority they have No Problemo with people bashing.

Catholics.

You can’t make fun of Muslims cuz that would be “disrespectful” … but boy oh boy … put a crucifix in a jar of urine and they’ll call it “artistic expression.” Even better, pee on a religious picture and do an entire sit com about some foolish Catholic woman who thinks the pee is miraculous tears.

The latest So What’s the Big Deal? shrug is over this abomination:

2013_10 04 Burger garnished with Communion wafer

Luke Tobias, director of operations at Kuma’s Corner, said he is baffled that Catholics are upset.

“We didn’t expect this reaction. Apparently, today, someone’s coming out to do a rosary prayer over our restaurant,” Tobias said. “We’ve done plenty of burgers named after fairly controversial bands in the past to seemingly no visible effect. It’s based on a band, just like every other burger on our menu.”

Seriously? You don’t get why this is offensive? Here’s a thought … do a burger that’s offensive to Muslims. You won’t be getting people saying rosaries for you, I can guarantee that.
