When Queen Elizabeth came here to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the British settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, George Bush welcomed her to the White House by noting she had last visited when she came to help us “celebrate America’s bicentennial in 177…1976.”

The gaffe drew laughs from the 7,000 spectators and Bush remarked Queen Elizabeth “gave me a look that only a mother could give a child.”

Later, at a black-tie gathering, the queen opened her dinner toast to the president with a playful grin. “Mr President, I wondered whether I should start this toast saying I was here in 1776 but I don’t think I will.”

The guests and Bush erupted with laughter and the queen smiled broadly before continuing with her text.

At the beginning of his toast, Bush said, “Your Majesty, I can’t top that one!”

Excited by power

Everybody who plans to set foot in a voting booth on Nov 6, 2012 should read this:

Excited by power, Obama ignores legal restraints By Timothy P. Carney – May 22, 2011

http://washingtonexaminer.com/politics/2011/05/excited-power-obama-ignores-legal-restraints

U.S. President Barack Obama delivers a statement about Libya in the East Room of the White House March 18, 2011 in Washington, DC. Under the Constitution and under the War Powers Act, the president is allowed to wage defensive wars for up to 60 days without prior Congressional approval. Now that 60 days have passed since the United States joined the hostilities, Obama’s war is more clearly illegal.

President Obama launched a U.S. war in Libya two months ago with no congressional approval. Under the Constitution and under the War Powers Act, which allows the president to wage defensive wars for up to 60 days without prior approval, Obama probably broke the law.

Now that 60 days have passed since the United States joined the hostilities, Obama’s war is more clearly illegal. But nobody should expect this to matter to a president with a long record of disregarding legal and constitutional limits on presidential and federal power.

Presidential arrogation of power is nothing new. President George W. Bush’s lawyer John Yoo declared in a post-9/11 memo that no congressional “statute …. can place any limits on the president’s determinations” about how to fight terrorism, proclaiming such decisions “are for the president alone to make.”

But Barack Obama ran against this imperial mind-set. On war powers, he said, “The president does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

More broadly, he declared, “No more ignoring the law when it’s inconvenient. That is not who we are. . . . . We will again set an example for the world that the law is not subject to the whims of stubborn rulers.”

Now that he’s president, Obama apparently believes the inverse: Stubborn rulers should not be subject to the whims of the law.

Dear Sir,                                                                                  May 22, 2011

I am enjoying reading your wonderful book.

Today, I read “The region is more hopeful” on p. 267 and felt I needed to send you the enclosed “Hope and Pride in Iraq: August 8, 2007” written by our daughter, while she was serving in The Surge in Iraq.

… [personal info] …

Oddly enough, my husband and I were born and raised in very liberal areas of deep blue states and come from totally civilian families. We’re not sure quite what we did right to have been blessed with our brood of heroes, but we Thank God for whatever it was, as we also Thank God for having had your leadership in the years post-9/11.

We miss that, but are delighted that you and yours are enjoying a well-earned and peaceful retirement out of the limelight and away from the Left’s ire. Please give our best to the lovely Laura and tell her we very much miss her too.

Sincerely in the love of Jesus Our Lord,

… [Chrissy the Hyphenated and SalTEADog]…

Hope and Pride in Iraq: August 8, 2007

By an American Soldier who had been living in Iraq for twelve months

I think it is hard to understand the people here unless you live among them as I have done. Many times, I have been frustrated at how they never seem to stand up for themselves and try to make things better. But with all that has happened in this country, things like hope and pride have been notably absent.

In areas that do not have a steady-state presence of Coalition Forces, daily life is mostly about keeping loved ones safe. But where Coalition Forces are in control, the locals can think beyond mere survival. Because they turn to us for security and medical help, there is no doubt in my mind that they are happy we are here.

For more than 25 years, Iraqis have had little or no say in local government and their young people know nothing about law enforcement, except that it is wise to avoid whichever people with guns are control at the moment.

But the people here are tired of the insurgency and tired of not being allowed to govern themselves and yesterday I saw seedlings of change. Yesterday, I saw Iraqis who were feeling both pride in their own country and hope that they can fix the things that are wrong and turn their homeland into a great nation.

Yesterday, I sat in on a meeting with the leaders of a newly formed, local security force.  Dressed in their finest clothes, armed with notebooks and pens, representatives from each tribe talked with great excitement, because for the first time in a quarter of a century, they were being given a chance to govern their own villages. The list of volunteers willing to provide twenty-four-hour protection on the roads and in the villages contained more than 2,000 names!

Then last night, I watched the locals bubbling over with excitement and pride when their national soccer team won the prestigious Asia Cup tournament. And there it all was: what we have been waiting for since the fall of Saddam. Iraqis with pride in their country, hope for the future, and the willingness to stand up and fight for change.

I know the fanatics who choose to kill innocent bystanders with their suicide bombs will not disappear over night. But the change has started. And watching this exciting change in these people among whom I have lived and worked for the past twelve months, I think I finally understand what our founding fathers must have felt.

Mythbusting: Big Media Lies

These three graphics are about stories the big media has messed up badly. I did them in part because I have a commitment to the truth, but also because they demonstrate that the MSM griping about some alleged need for government to control misinformation on the internet is a question of the pot calling the kettle black.

I wonder how many Leftist protesters would agree to THIS:

So I’m back from SERE school…

http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=549642

I spent Thursday through Thursday in the field, during which time they gave us half an apple. Total. I personally killed a lizard (fast little buggers), cut its head and legs off, and ate it. Tasted like shrimp tails. I lost 17 lbs over the course of the adventure.

Then there was the sleep. We had no blankets/sleeping bags/etc. so we were sleeping in the open in ~20-30 weather, when it was a soaring 95-105 during the day. Meaning very little sleep took place.

And that’s the first few days when we were allowed to sleep. After that we were running from the “bad guys” so we didn’t sleep much because it was easiest to move from point to point at night.

I made it to the siren when everyone has to come out, so I wasn’t caught by the bad guys at all. At one point I was hiding in tall grass and a bad guy stepped over me – saw the bottoms of his feet. Pretty slick, I’d say.

The POW camp part is all classified, and I don’t know how I could ever put it into words. The most dehumanizing, mentally and physically difficult experience of my life, especially after 5 days of no sleep and no food. Except my buddy the lizard.

One thing I can say… my home was a 2.5’x3’x4′ box. You don’t know back pain till you live in one of those, I tell you what.

Altogether I’m extremely glad I went. It was VERY rewarding, and I’m very proud of myself for pulling it off, with honors.
