PRO-LIFE vs. PRO-DEATH: Report from the front lines

On Saturday, January 25, 2014, the Walk for Life was in San Francisco where a counter-protest had been organized by a radical pro-abortion group that calls pregnancy “enslavement” and publicly advocates for violence against Pro-Lifers.

A spokesperson for Students for Life noted that those who are often the most hateful are those still hurting from their abortion and is why everything we do is peaceful and in love. It’s something we should all remember.

I love this story!

The case for Sheen miracle

In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that he lived a life of “heroic virtues” – a major step towards beatification.

Bishop Sheen was my bishop back when I was in junior high school and one of my favorite actors (Martin Sheen) named himself (professionally) after him. (Martin Sheen’s real name is Ramón Estévez. He and his son, Emilio Estevez, made a wonderful movie in 2010 called The Way. If you haven’t seen it, make the time. It’s a gem.)

Dearest and I had our own unplanned miracle baby, so this story hit close to home. We knew the baby was in trouble early on and prayed for St. Gerard’s intercession on our pastor’s recommendation. We also had lots and lots of people praying for us … two whole church communities (one in Japan!) adopted us for prayer.

Like this family, our Catholic faith was extremely important to our journey through a very scary, difficult pregnancy with little Warrior Princess. Because of our problems, we began seeing a Perinatologist (high risk pregnancy specialist) at 20 weeks. Based on our medical history, he was optimistic that we could maybe get her to 35 weeks before we would have to deliver by C-section. Then he got back the first amniocentesis test.

It was grim. We were looking at possible intrauterine transfusions to try and get her to 28 weeks, the earliest he would be comfortable delivering her. But after that first amnio, each of the next six got better instead of worse … much to his surprise. He said he was the Rh expert in central New York and he knew of no case where Rh disease had gotten better during the pregnancy. Not one. Until us.

We went full term and had a normal, healthy delivery. No C-section. No NICU. No transfusions. During my post-delivery visits in the hospital, he would look at my charts, staring and shaking his head. I finally asked why. He showed me the graph of amnio results and explained how unprecedented it was for an Rh baby to get better.

I said, “Well we had a lot of prayer!”

He replied, “You can call this a ‘miracle’ if you want. I certainly can’t explain it!”

Worst argument for abortion EVER

The New York Times published a piece by a Notre Dame philosophy professor that calls on the pope to “liberalize” the church’s unequivocal opposition to abortion.

Before I parse his deeply flawed argument, let me just pause for a big WTF moment over a Notre Dame philosophy professor who doesn’t seem to have a clue that Catholic doctrines like “abortion is murder” are based on divine revelation, that God is the same yesterday, today and forever, and therefore doctrine is not subject to “liberalizing.”

Jeremiah 1-5 I knew you before

According to this man’s so-called reasoning, “an early-stage embryo may be biologically human but still lack the main features — consciousness, self-awareness, an interest in the future — that underlie most moral considerations. An organism may be human by purely biological criteria, but still merely potentially human in the full moral sense.”

Apparently, this “philosopher” is saying he believes it’s okay to kill little human beings as long as they’re less than eight weeks old. This would cover mini-dose birth control pills and IUDs (which allow conception, but prevent implantation), as well as the morning after pill (which also prevents implantation) and suction abortions up to 8 weeks gestation (when the embryo becomes a fetus). N.b., first trimester suction abortions are routinely done up to 12 weeks gestation (aka, 14 weeks pregnant).

Embryo becomes fetus

I get the “consciousness” or “self-awareness” thing, but not how he manages to differentiate embryos from fetuses.  Who the heck knows how “self-aware” an unborn baby is?! My gut tells me that the real reason he draws his line where he does is that he and his kind want to have sex without consequences, but are grossed out about killing anything that looks like a baby.

What this man sorely needs is to catch a clue. Catholic doctrine on abortion is not based on the biologically humanity of the unborn life, but on our belief that God gives an immortal soul to each and every human being at conception. Philosopher guy also needs to brush up on developmental psychology, logic and slippery slopes cuz boy howdy, if you take that whole “full moral sense” thing seriously, it opens up a big, ugly can of Nazi worms.

Did you know that it has long been the teaching of the Catholic Church that a human being is not capable of making ethical or moral decisions much before the age of seven years after birth?  Think how convenient it would be if you could off any kid who didn’t meet a minimum set of requirements before age seven. I bet Obamacare would even pay for it, you know? Save the taxpayers a bundle on remedial education and whatnot.

Developmental psychologists go even further than the Catholic Church in identifying at least half a dozen increasingly sophisticated moral and ethical stages that humans progress through. They also know that many people get stuck at some point along the way and never achieve the highest level at all. Wow … talk about convenient!  We could push that okay-to-kill thing up to include anyone who hasn’t made it to Stage 6, then Democrats could by-pass all that tedious harassing by the IRS and go straight to “aborting” Tea Partiers for failing to “take the views of others into account.”

Stages of Morality

Whatchawannabet the author of this so-called argument for the morality of early abortion considers himself a fully potentialized and deeply moral human and not … you know … an embryonic Nazi?

The Republican Party’s 2012 platform calls for a ban on abortion, but is silent on exceptions, leaving that decision up to Congress and the states.

Wednesday: Pro-Life March in DC

I’m helping Dearest get ready for the Pro-Life March in DC. It’s challenging because they’ll be in the same clothes for 24 hours, about half on the bus, some at inside venues and the rest out on the mall … in January. And one of the venues they’re visiting doesn’t want backpacks taken inside, which means everything he wants or needs has to be worn or carried in pockets or hanging off his neck. He leaves tomorrow night and returns Wednesday night. Please pray for blessings, joy and safe travel for him and all those going to this event. Thank you.

The Choice By Emily Stimpson

Why will half a million people be smiling this Wednesday?

Why, as they walk in protest of one of the greatest tragedies this nation has ever known, will there be laughter? Why will there be singing? Why will there be little ones running about, teens walking arm in arm, and adults hugging, chatting, and catching up with long absent friends?

Because it’s a March for Life, which means it’s an event shot through, from first to last, with hope.

If you want to understand the March for Life, if you want to understand the pro-life movement in general, it starts with hope. That’s the key. That’s the real difference between those who oppose abortion and those who support it. The first is an act of hope. The second is an act of despair.

How so?

Who gets abortions really?

Family Research Council analyzed demographic data to find out what the real story is behind abortion.

1 in 6 women have obtained an abortion.

N.b., abortion advocates claim 1/3 of women have obtained an abortion.

Income and abortion are not strongly correlated.

I.e., poor girls are just about as likely to obtain an abortion as are rich girls.

Teen sex however is strongly correlated.
