I have some internal conflict about this whole no-tax thing, because I’m in it myself…and while I think it’s stupid that so many people don’t pay taxes, I’m not voluntarily forking over money to those idiots in the federal government if I don’t have to do so.
4-5 years ago, I was grossing $12-15,000/month. Of course I was working six 12-hr. shifts/week, 72 hrs. of hoofing it up and down hospital hallways, sometimes with hardly a bathroom break, keeping those pregnant women moving along to delivery and post-partum. And I did it for years, so that my daughters could stay home and care for their disturbed children (those of you that have heard the story of the molestation and its aftermath already know what I’m talking about; the rest of you can “just trust me”!), and my oldest daughter also lived with my parents and took care of them until my mom died, and then she had my dad for another 6 years or so. When I started my “enhanced” work schedule, we had 8 people between the ages of 7 months and 87 years, who needed to be taken care of. As a nurse, I had the greatest capacity for earning money, so the girls took care of the very young and the very old and I went out and laid golden eggs. It was a reasonable, fair distribution of labor, as far as I was concerned, and it worked very well for a very long time. I certainly paid my fair share of taxes during THOSE years!!!
And then my feet gave out. After working in constant pain for almost a year, I had surgery done on one foot. The surgery failed, and when I tried to hobble back to work after a year off for “healing” (during which time, I had walked more than 600 miles, in 8-mile increments, trying to get my foot to work right; all I accomplished was to wear out a good pair of shoes, and acquire an extremely odd tan) , I couldn’t hack it any more.
So I wasn’t a nurse any more, and with my husband retired and me on permanent disability, we had a precipitous 81% drop in our income. I don’t care WHO you are, or how much you have–you lose that much all at once, and life-style adjustments will have to be made. It certainly adjusted our tax bracket!!!
So my philosophical opinion about so many people not paying taxes has remained the same; my personal contributions to the functions of government has not…and sometimes I feel a bit guilty about occasionally voicing my opinions about those “deadbeats” suckling on the public teat! 😯 But even though I’m not paying taxes at the moment, it still doesn’t seem “right” to me that so many of us should be riding on the backs of the workers of America. Like I said, I’m conflicted.

Heh…you must be part of that missing 2%. I think the first step is for the gov’t to stop giving money to people that they didn’t pay in. If your credits and such are more than what you paid in taxes, you should get $0 back!

I didn’t pay any taxes. My husband’s SS and my SSI don’t provide enough for us to get charged, I guess, since our taxable income was $0. My dad’s taxable income was only $11,000 something, so got money back, but there’s no denying that we’re getting benefits for which we are not currently forking anything out.

And yet you must have paid a LOT in taxes back when you were working 72-hour weeks. If I did the arithmetic right, you were grossing almost double what our income is in a year when my husband is steadily employed, and we pay an insane amount in taxes. You were living in a high tax state, so I can’t imagine you were paying less than we do, and given your higher income, I think you must have paid a lot more.

I know I paid a lot in taxes–I did the taxes every year–but I still feel funny waxing eloquent about tax deadbeats. Weird, huh? And yet there are people who have never paid taxes, and have no intention of ever paying taxes, who are still perfectly comfortable whining about not getting enough.
Those were some hectic, exhausting years for us all, that’s for sure! And yet, as far as I was concerned, what I was doing was WAY preferable to what my daughters were doing (6 constantly-whiny youngsters and 2 intermittently-whiny oldsters). They couldn’t have done what they did without me, but I surely couldn’t have done what I did without THEM!

Planned Parenthood: I always used to advise my living-elsewhere daughters that PP was a good place to go, for contraceptives and a yearly Pap. Then my daughter told me she couldn’t afford to go, because it cost $250.00 GGGRRR.

Oh, I had no idea. That is more than it costs me for a Pap at my doctor without insurance. Thankfully, I don’t need the year of contraceptives, but I thought those were relatively inexpensive last I heard.

Not many people are aware that food stamps were cut to pay for Michelle Obama’s stupid Let’s Move project that bullies overweight children. From last summer….

Shouldn’t we be feeding the hungry kids first ?

Shouldn’t we change the food stamps program so that only healthy food can be purchased with it? Wouldn’t that feed kids and make them healthier at the same time?
I’m a big fan of WIC – you are limited in what you can buy and it’s mainly healthy items (dairy, formula, etc.)
Why can’t we change food stamps to where they can only buy chicken, fruits and vegetables and dairy?

Also….there is no reason why movement can’t be incorporated into the classrooms…..relay races for reviewing matieral – around the world (not much movement but at least a little) –
If teachers started each transistion into a new subject with stretching exercises they could get the kids moving and quite possibly have kids who pay better attention.

RE: tax returns
Bravo to the Obamas on their generosity this past year! “The President and First Lady also reported donating $245,075 – or about 14.2% of their adjusted gross income – to 36 different charities. The largest reported gift to charity was a $131,075 contribution to the Fisher House Foundation. The President is donating the after-tax proceeds from his children’s book to a Fisher House scholarship fund for children of fallen and disabled soldiers. ”
As for Joe and Jill … snort. Didja happen to notice the White House press release did NOT cite their charity percentage? “The Bidens contributed $5,350 to charity, in both monetary and in-kind donations.”
I looked it up. $950 of their deduction was for clothing and household goods — i.e., their cast-offs — donated to various thrift shops. I’m glad this stuff is deductible, else people like the Bidens would probably just take the easier route and throw their perfectly good stuff in the trash.
But I personally don’t think “I bought something nice and new for me, so let’s get a tax deduction on this thing I don’t want any more” is quite in the same category of “generous” as writing an actual check that reduces the number of dollars you have to spend on said nice and new stuff.
I did the math both ways. With the Good Will stuff, the Bidens donated 1.4%. Without, it was 1.1%. They’re supposedly Catholics, as Joe Biden likes to remind us every time he votes for more funding for abortion. He once famously threatened to shove his rosary beads down the throat of the next person who questioned his commitment to his faith.
Okay, so I’m Catholic and I once helped prepare adult converts for baptism and confirmation. IOW, my credentials on what the Church teaches are a tad better than those famously “used to be an altar boy” types that always get it wrong in Hollywood.
The Church says that, back in OT times when 10% was the tithe, Israel was a theocratic nation. The government was the church was the government. That 10%, therefore, went to cover costs that we pay taxes for now. With that in mind, the recommendation for American Catholics is 2.5% of your gross for salaried workers. (This works out to about one hour’s wage per week for a 40 hr per week wage earner. )
The Obamas didn’t used to be particularly generous, but have become more so with each year they’re in the national spot light. The Bidens? They’ve always been and continue to be just plain stingy.

I give stuff away to charities all the time. I call it downsizing, never thought about the tax deduction. Our tax guy discourages claiming anything unless we have the original receipt, and only then, it’s for fair market value as used items. Comes in handy if you’re audited, which I doubt the Bidens will ever be 😀

Funny…the VVA just picked up a bunch of stuff (2 boxes and 1 bag) from my house this morning. I usually just use whatever online guidance I can find from the charities’ websites, since I generally have mostly clothes. You can break it down piece by piece, but I just use whatever they recommend for a “bag/box of clothing.”
