Good morning! Blessed treat today: I got to sleep in until eight instead of rise-and-shine at four thirty! Bottom line, just now having cup of coffee and have not even begun my “clicky-clicky” of Pete’s links; just like to check in and see what friends are up and about.

Did notice the first ‘silly golfer’ picture. I try to keep that hidden from my men and boys around here. That guy is giving the game a sissy, cry baby image. I can just see the eleven year old refusing to golf with dad and brothers saying, “Ew! Everyone will think I am a wimp playing a girl’s sport!” 🙂

Good morning, WAH! Sleeping in until 8, I don’t remember the last time I did that and it wasn’t because I had been up for hours in the middle of the night! Enjoy your well rested day!

Not sure if you saw, but Mafia and I were able to meet Andrew Breitbart and hear Herman Cain speak. If I can muster up enough energy I’ll do a brief summary of our Smart Girl Summit.

“Smart Girl Summit” Love it!!! I really did get to sleep in until eight. Plus I let the kids stay up all night so they will be sleeping all day. It is really quiet; sort of lonely. My sleeping in did consist of waking at three-thirty and five to place some wake-up calls, plus the good-bye kiss from the hubby at five-thirty. Big highlight is there was coffee in the pot when I awoke! Am I a loved woman or what?

      • Yes, and I want to contribute, as well, but, unfortunately, I went from one vacation right into another (w/ hubby and kids). So, I’ll do what I can over the next few days, but probably won’t post anything until I get home. I will say it was very fun and informative and I also enjoyed meeting Phyllis Schlafly. I just can’t believe I’d never heard of her before!

Go Debra! Write what you can. I’ll try to add to it.

Watched the Palin interview, I thought it was fantastic. I saw on C4P posters thought she held back too much, but I thought she was perfect. Also noticed her voice seemed different, more controlled. I had hoped that she would take some voice coaching as any public speaker should if they want to be as impactful as possible. After watching The Undefeated I am anxiously awaiting her announcement. Listening to people cheer and clap during her speeches in our crowded ballroom was encouraging. Knowing she very well could be our next president is inspiring. The Undefeated reminded me of many of her accomplishments that I had simply forgotten after reading Going Rogue so many months ago. If you aren’t aware of everything she did in Alaska, I’d highly recommend renting it on Pay Per View when it becomes available. Last I read it should be available the last week in August. I’m making (okay, asking!) my DH to watch it. He should at least see it before I start making campaign contributions!!!

    • If Sarah ran the U.S. like she ran Alaska, we’d become healthier fiscally, morally and productively. She has a great gift for the common sense approach to problem solving.

I am SO on the same page with him on this bit:

“I am past exhausted talking about liberal media bias. It’s real, we all know it, and people who deny it aren’t even fooling themselves. But some things just have to be pointed out.”

Going back to read the rest now …

Referencing Biden calling Republicans terrorists, “(His office says, no, no the vice president didn’t call them terrorists, he just politely agreed with all the Democratic congressmen in the room that they “acted like terrorists.”)”

When I used this technicality with my mom about about calling her a b*tch and I explained to her that I did NOT call her that; just said she was acting like one, I STILL GOT THE LILAC SWITCH. Just saying.

LOL! I can see it now, my daughter in 10 years saying “I didn’t say you were a b*tch, I said you were like a b*tch” Yeah, no dice.

      • I shudder to think what my mother would have done if I had ever even used the word “b*tch” in her presence, let alone told her she was acting like one. At a bare minimum I would have had my mouth washed out with soap and been grounded for at least a month. If my dad had been within earshot, the consequences would have been much more severe.

I sassed my dad exactly once in my life. I still remember every moment … his turning to me, red faced and very angry, me pressing myself in fear against a wall as he stomped down the hall toward me, then seeing him get hold of himself, stop, calm himself and tell me in no uncertain terms to never EVER talk to him like that again. You better believe I didn’t.

I have to honor him for this. I remember when we went bowling once. He wasn’t a big man, but he was an athlete and very powerful. One of the pins flew up into the air and SPUN AROUND like an airplane propeller before it came down again. If he’d ever hit any of us, we’d have needed medical attention.

My mother told me once he was physically abused as a child. One time, he was sent to get groceries and he spent one penny of the change on candy for himself. Mom said his father beat him so badly, it nearly killed him.

That old canard about “abused children become abusers” is b.s. Abusers may often have been abused, but many abused children grow up to be very nurturing and protective.

          • When my dad was a little boy, his mother punished misbehavior by locking him in a kitchen cupboard, or by holding him upside down with his head in a toilet and flushing it. As a consequence, he suffered from claustrophobia and fear of water all his life. Yet somehow he managed to survive two years in the Navy in WW2. I’ve never been able to figure out how he did that without cracking up.

I was fourteen and never, and I mean never sassed her after the b*tch fiasco until I left home at eighteen. Never. Always a smile. Did not even say it in my head. I wore dark hose all week to school (wore uniform skirts) from the switch marks. I was surprised as I had only been spanked once before, at seven, for stealing. My mother basically did not believe in spanking; slapslicing, yes but not spanking. (slapslicing in a slap that is sliced down the cheek so there is only sting and no impact to face and/or ear. It is intended to stop the spewing from the mouth and not as a punishment. I was the seventh child and think I was the the recipient of half of all spankings she ever issued.

I can understand the uneven parenting experience. My golden brother, Mom’s favorite child, wrote glowingly in her eulogy about what a wonderful mother she’d been to all of us. Then there was the therapist I went to for years who heard all the toxic parenting stories and helped me understand that it hadn’t been me who was bad.

My folks didn’t lay a hand on any of us that I am aware of, apart from Mom’s variation on the slapslice … one quick swat to the bottom. We all had enough to eat, nice clothes, a secure roof, vacations, lessons and a college education from them. Love and nurture, not so much. Especially not the two (of six) of us who were Mom’s scapegoats.

These days, I count it a blessing to have been the primary recipient of her negative behaviors, because it messed me up enough to get out of the web and get therapy, which benefited my marriage and my kids immensely.
