I talk to my cats all the time. Usually something like “Oscar! Get off that counter, you stupid cat!” or “Figaro! Get out of the garbage, you idiot!” or something similar.

For “proper province of government,” I’m personally fond of life, liberty, and property (or “estate” as Locke said). Ensure those, we’ll take care of happiness. FraternitĂ© should follow, God willing.

Or if you’re using a Mac, you just hold down the “e” and it will give you a whole bunch of options — è, Ă©, ĂŞ, Ă«, Ä“, Ä—, Ä™ — and you just click the one you want. Similarly for any other letter of the alphabet that needs a diacritical mark of some sort, such as ĂĄ, ç, ĂŻ, ñ, ø, Ă», etc.
