So the taxpayers will need to pay for two ballots for national elections? Or will these kids just get a ballot and be told, “Oh, btw, you cannot vote for president because you are not old enough”.
Heck, why stop at 16. Why not let kids vote when they are tall enough to go on a roller coaster.

The guys who wrote the Constitution set the voting age at 21 at a time when most people began assuming adult responsibilities in their teens. Now adolescence extends into the mid-twenties and kids don’t grow up until they’re in their 30s, if then. Lowering the voting age to 18 was a huge mistake. I think we should raise it to at least 25, although 30 would be better.

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I am disgusted with all these young women, being scared into cutting up their bodies because of relative risk, not absolute risk.
There is a big difference.
Jolie’s mother died of ovarian cancer, not breast cancer! So what’s next? Is Jolie going to cut all her organs out too? And wasn’t her mother an alcoholic at one time? THAT will raise one’s risk as much as any gene.
Plus, gene therapy is not exact science. Why in the world would a beautiful woman mutilate her body because of some test?
Does she hate her beauty so much, she wants to be known for her “heroics”. Sadly, more young women will now be scared into these procedures.
Do they every suggest men cut off their balls because they MIGHT get prostate cancer? Of course not. That would be totally NUTS!
What they do to us women, in the name of “saving us” is so infuriating.
BTW-the clinic that did this to her are now touting their “preventative care”. I wonder how much they will pay her now to be their spokesperson?

That was news to me that Jolie’s mom had ovarian cancer. That kinda changes everything, doesn’t it? Or at least makes it more absurd what Angelina did. I agree with you and think people put too much confidence in medicine, which is notoriously unreliable. Otherwise, why would one of the biggest causes of death in the U.S. be “hospital errors and medical malpractice?” I think it’s a huge mistake to even get screened for genetics. It’s only a recipe for anxiety, by definition. And if you’re a person of faith, what does it matter?

Almost everyone knows some living person who is supposed to be dead, according to some doctor’s opinion. One friend of mine had a relative whose doctors told her in her 30s to get her affairs in order, because she only had a brief time to live. She lived many decades more — long enough to attend the funerals of all the doctors who’d warned of her imminent demise.

True. And, for some reason. I personally know at least 4 women who were told their babies would have severe birth defects and were encouraged to abort, refused, and then had healthy, perfect babies. Makes you really skeptical.

I know a few of those too… and I can guarandamntee you that any woman pregnant under the circumstances my mother was facing when she conceived me (back when killing babies was still illegal) would be advised to abort, so this issue hits close to home.
Sadly, I also know a woman who miscarried a perfectly healthy and desperately wanted baby because she took her doctor’s advice to have amniocentesis (a procedure that increases the risk of miscarriage) to determine whether the baby had Down’s Syndrome. She had no plan to abort if the baby had Down’s, but she was hoping to be reassured that the baby was fine (he was), which would make the rest of the pregnancy less stressful. It ended up making the rest of the pregnancy much shorter, but not in a good way.

Never mind why pic … another one of those moments when a parent or pet owner stopped to take a photograph BEFORE helping. And I do realize the kids and pets were not in real danger in any of these photos. In fact, my own kid took one of them of Buzz. She assured me she did check he could breathe before snapping the pic of him sleeping in the grocery cart seat, having done a faceplant on to his winter parka. ::snort:: I just find it interesting how many of these crop up on the ‘net. Probably something to do with social networking, but methinks it’s more about camera-phones that everybody seems to keep attached to their bodies 24/7. We had a houseguest who wouldn’t even put the think on the bedside table when she plugged it in at night. She kept it on the pillow next to her face!

I love every minute I spend in this garden and I appreciate all the many hours you both put into this wonderful site.
