All Day Shopping Frenzy on Thanksgiving?

Now, Via says she’ll never host Thanksgiving dinner for her relatives again

I think it is a great idea. Feed the men, let them crash on the couch, and go shopping. They never talk to us anyway. They are either in a food coma, or glued to football on the TV.
It would be nice if the clean up fairies did their magic while the women were out.

      • I disagree. Shopping’s not the answer. Both the men and the gals should save a little room for some more wine and beer and do something you both enjoy: humiliating the children. Usually, if you just get them talking, they humiliate themselves pretty well, and that’s less work for you, but just as many laughs! 😉

        • I really hope you’re just in a snarky mood, Grunt. I stopped visiting my sister because I couldn’t bear the way she and her husband humiliated their children non-stop.

          • Not snark so much, but not the h-word in the way you’re thinking. I meant the fun kind of teasing where everybody ends up laughing. Getting the kids, and the men and women, involved in the conversation at the big table is one of my jobs as current patriarch of the Grunt clan, and the result is always worth the effort, so I highly recommend it. Not that there’s anything wrong with the splinter talk or football later. But if there isn’t a big conversation at the table, then it ain’t dinner. Or Thanksgiving.

There are actually two things I regretted about the above comment. I knew as soon as I wrote it that the h-word would bring up bad memories for some, and I especially thought of you, Chrissy. I’m sorry about that. I thought of using a different word, but that, too, had the same risk. The 2nd thing I worried about was the mention of drinking. To many families, drinking at a family dinner only brings out the worst in strained relations. Sometimes, for good reason, it needs to be excluded. To me, it’s part of the traditional of relaxing and sharing and good humor in our family that goes way back. We are lucky in that regard; it’s been a few generations since anyone got nasty when they got to “be themselves.”

Now, in being explicit about these things, I’m going to make even more people recall bad memories. Such is the nature of family, eh? None of us has the perfect one. Some struggle through the worst. But I suggest, rather than blaming the booze or the rules about who does the dishes or the football, that we reinvest ourselves, always, without tiring or growing bitter, in repairing those relationships and building up those close to us, so that no bitterness remains. And when that fails, because it always does to some extent (stubbornness knows no bounds, right?), let us suffer more gladly, more confidently that our patience will pay off. Because it does. What did Frank Capra say when asked why he put so much hope in his movies amidst such desolation? Because that’s the way it is in real life.

And to GP, this is not directed at you. I know your comment was just a bit of snark about men, and it was well-deserved, of course. 😉

          • Humiliating us kids was one of my dad’s favorite hobbies. I don’t know why he got so much pleasure out of it, but I hated it. It was just one of the many reasons my relationship with him went from bad to worse to practically nonexistent. Our relationship at the time of his death was such that when I heard he had died, I reacted pretty much the way you react when you read a stranger’s obituary in the newspaper.

            • Sorry to hear it, Bob. I’ve never understood that, either. Even the good-natured teasing, if it’s not about something your kid is proud of, will not open them up and be a positive thing. To do it right, you have to know, ahead of time, how they will respond, and that means you have to know them. You have to know they won’t see it as legitimate criticism. Maybe that’s where most of us dads mess up. And moms. One thing I admire about Gruntessa is her ability to tease her children in ways that make use of their closeness to manufacture a lot of funny drama. Keeps everybody engaged in a lighthearted way. I imagine your house being something like that, Bob, with all the theater-hounds among your children. I imagine half the table asking for the potatoes in Shakespearese and the other side howling in disgust.

              • Good-natured teasing is fine, assuming everyone involved knows how to do it without being hurtful, and understands each other’s limits. But it can be tricky, especially when someone is going through a difficult time and apt to be overly sensitive. I’ve been on both the receiving end and the giving end of what was intended to be good-natured teasing but was taken the wrong way and caused a really toxic reaction. I think it only works when it’s someone you know really, really well, and who is 100% secure in your love (or friendship, or whatever the relationship happens to be).

                • Really well said, Bob. And that 100% is really, really hard to achieve, but we still need it; male or female, it makes no difference. We pretend otherwise, and we scrape along pretty good without it, but we still need it.

          • I hope we’re ok on this, CtH? No hard feelings? This is the kind of goofing around I was talking about.

Doctors Will Be Left Paying Tab for Obamacare ‘Grace Periods’: Report
“It will help break the system,” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) told Watchdog.org. “This is a huge piece of evidence to show this can’t work, you will break the system and bankrupt people involved.”

“The hospitals, doctors and insurance companies will be left holding the bag. There will be disagreements over who will pay for what. Lawyers will get involved because we are talking about a lot of money,” he added.

    Obamacare victimizing cancer patients
ObamaCare is supposed to be a huge boon for anyone with a pre-existing condition. Count that another promise broken: It’s actually denying care because of pre-existing conditions.

Millions of Americans with cancer and other chronic illnesses will wind up paying more for lifesaving care, if they can get it all.

No matter how low in popularity, Obama keeps his stranglehold on America
No one is stepping forward to loosen that deadly grip.

It doesn’t matter how often you read or hear the words, “Impeach Obama”, it will never happen.

What does truly matter is that everyday people must—somehow—survive the next three years, because unless he decides to leave Dodge on his own, or natural causes overtake him, Obama will will go on being the most brutal Commander in Chief of all time

Too bad we do not have an Americanfreepress, telling it like it is.
Obama is so lazy that I am sure he will spend his last couple of years just lolling around the white hut in his sweats, biding his time, since he is quickly becoming an early lame duck.
