PETE’S PAGE; CHRISTMAS AFTERGLOW EDITION

Posted by Pistol Pete

Hope everybody had a  wonderful and blessed Christmas. Ours was excellent, though I must confess I’m glad its over for another year. As usual,DW put on an awesome meal and the little ones had fun sledding on the big hill behind our house. I watched them through the sliders and tried to remember when I had that much energy.

Just had to post a few things to keep in shape.

This is our oldest granddaughter,Jessica. She’s 18 and turned into quite a lady. Whenever the family gets together Miss Olivia attatches herself to Jess like a lamprey eel on a shark. Olivia is a bigger ham than the one we enjoyed for dinner.

This is DW with the electric scent machine she got.

My favorite gift…a cup with a picture of my little ones that says:love you papa. I’ll treasure this long after they’ve grown up.

Love this! Sending it out to my football loving family. The lightweight college football league trophy is named after my dad. My eldest brother is head coach at CU now after him. At the Army Wedding, I dressed two Potato Heads as bride (in Cornell colors) and groom (Texas Longhorns, sil’s fave team). This week, Coach Brother got Army Baby a Cornell Spring tshirt. LOL It’ll make a nice change from the Texas Longhorn tshirts, hats, jackets, onesies, blankies, bibs ……

      • Kind of an understatement, really. That’s a seriously hard-core football family, and Bob’s a legend!

“Bob” ??? You know about my Pater? (And that should say Sprint, not Spring.)

          Like

          • Yeah, but you mentioned “lightweight” football, which implies “sprint,” so it should be clear enough.

I was only vaguely aware of the old man and the family “dynasty,” and I didn’t make the connection to your family until you mentioned it, so I took the opportunity to read up. Pretty cool, Chrissy! I’m surprised you don’t talk football more often than you do. You keep it pretty low key. I may be starting to understand the “hyphenated” thing now. 😉

I asked my groom-to-be if he’d consider attaching our last names with a dash and he said he’d be proud to bear my maiden moniker. He just wanted his to come first, cuz it came earlier in the alphabet! LOL It sounded better that way anyhow, so that’s what we did. The girls all took their husband’s last names, so we are back down to the original two and only with our last name.

              Like

              • Nothing wrong with that. It works, and it does sound good that way. And, of course, it will still be a famous name when you and DH become a Washington power-couple in conservative politics. I’d vote for either one of ya. 🙂

I am so grateful to the anonymous hunter who provided me with his own deer meat the winter after I was hospitalized and desperately needed organic protein.

My husband occasionally hunts deer and elk out west. Since it can be incredibly expensive to ship an entire kill home, he donates at least half of the meat to a local VFW. It’s just the two of us here, so what he brings home is plenty for us. It’s a win-win for everyone!

      • Not to mention that every deer that gets turned into food means one less (fewer?) to get hit on the highway. In my part of the country, it’s one of the worst driving hazards we face. Snow and ice are nothing compared with suicidal whitetail deer who insist on crossing the road in traffic, usually stopping halfway across so they can take a moment to stare at the vehicle that’s just about to collide with them. You would think the stupid ones would have been weeded out by now, raising the collective IQ of the deer population, but it hasn’t worked that way. (Charles Darwin, where are you?)

        • I know what you mean, Bob. It’s bad here, but it’s worse in the Midwest, where there’s more food and bigger herds. When we go to see DD in central Michigan, driving at night is terror-inducing because of the sea of venison.

          • So true. Astonishingly, I have been driving in Wisconsin for 36 years and I still haven’t hit a deer, although I’ve had a few close calls. Most people who’ve lived here as long as I have have hit at least one deer, often more, so I don’t really know why I’ve been so lucky… so far, anyway. It’s certainly not because I’m a better driver than all those other people.

            • Good for you! That IS astonishing. I attribute my deer-slaughter-free record to prayers, often to plead with St. Francis to give the furry critters a heads up that I’m coming. So far, so good, although I did pick up a ricochet near Boulder one night. Other driver in oncoming lane got a buck good, and then he crawled into my lane and I couldn’t avoid finishing him off quickly. I don’t count that because he was already well on his way to deer heaven.

The whitetails are numerous here and so arrogant that one gave birth on my mother’s front lawn while she watched from the window.

I had one come up ON my front porch to eat all the blooms and leaves off my hollyhocks. I woke up to a garden full of tall bare nekkid stalks. Morticia would’ve liked it.

As a family, we’ve only had one road kill. Does anyone hit a deer and NOT have to total the car? I won’t even ask about elk or moose. You’re lucky to walk away from those.

I hit one a few years ago at night…saw it jump into my headlight beams right before we collided, so I had a split second to adjust my trajectory. Destroyed the front-passenger side of my car anyway. It would’ve been totaled if I didn’t have a dad who fixes auto-frames, and a friend who does body work.

Being an animal lover, I took it pretty hard. The highway patrolman who stopped to help out, laughed at me because the first thing I said to him (bawling) was, “I killed the poor deer! I’m so sorry!” He said, “Ma’am, you’re my fifth car-deer accident call tonight. They’re suicidal; it’s not your fault.” I hope that never happens again, but living in MN, I guess I’m lucky it has only happened once.

UNUSUALLY WARM WEATHER is responsible for people getting chunks of flesh chomped off them by carnivorous fish! We need to ban a factory or something. Like right now! A child lost a finger. So it’s for the children!

(Never mind that these people went swimming in a river KNOWN TO BE PACKED WITH PIRANHAS. Keep moving. Nothing to see there.)
