Went online this morning to reconcile my bank account with the figures in my checkbook. Apparently the bank is using common core math,because there was a substantial discrepency in the figures. I can’t see where the mistake is,but you don’t argue with the bank. Just assume they’re right or risk a visit from Mister Overdraft. Then you get that note in the mail informing you that the bank has charged you more of what they already know you don’t have any of.

Kindergartners and first grade students will not be allowed to speak English in half of their classes at a Wyoming elementary school this year. The reason, said officials at Park Elementary School in Casper, Wyoming, is the school is now offering dual-language education.

This is actually a great way to learn a language. When my bro was abroad, he put his kid into a local school where nobody spoke English. She learned so fast, he had her translating for him when they went shopping. She was 5.

Some friends of ours had a cook/nanny from Taiwan when their son was just a baby, and that little boy learned to speak Chinese like a native. It was a hoot to hear perfect Chinese (I’m guessing Mandarin, although I’m not sure) coming from the mouth of that little blonde-haired blue-eyed kid.

My brother speaks Japanese. He was on an airport bus once with a Japanese mom and young boy who had just arrived in the U.S. The boy, about 5 yo, was on his knees, eagerly looking out at America for the first time when he exclaimed, in Japanese, “Mommy! They have McDonald’s HERE TOO!”

It might be worth your time to find the $ problem, Pete. My brother and I have both found errors made by the banks that, when we pointed them out, were corrected and we got the fees refunded. But you only have 30 days to contest it.

I agree. I find errors in my bank statement every now and then, and whenever I point it out to the bank, they correct it and refund the fees. (I don’t bother if it’s a tiny amount — only it it’s enough to warrant the trouble of contesting it.) I have done the same with credit card statements. A couple of months ago I saw an interest charge on my Visa bill, which I was pretty sure was wrong, since I pay my bills on time and in full. All it took was a call to HQ, and the charge was eliminated. Five minutes to save almost ninety bucks? I’ll take it.

Except that sometimes checking statements costs you money. I still do it anyway, but once I found a mysterious deposit in our bank account that I couldn’t explain. I asked them about it, and it turns out they deposited some poor guy’s paycheck into our account by mistake. Gotta wonder how that happens.

Haha! I’ve never had that happen, but one time I went to the drive-up to cash a check, and the teller gave me $100 more cash than she was supposed to. I had to park the car and go inside the bank and explain to the people what had happened before they would let me return the money. They all looked at me kind of flabbergasted, as if they couldn’t believe I was returning the money, when I could have driven off with it and no one would ever have known. Of course the books would not have balanced at the end of the day, but no one would ever have known where that missing $100 went. Well, no one other than me. 🙂
