HONORING THE DEAD: Today is the Feast of All Souls, a day when we Catholics make a point of praying for the poor souls in Purgatory – i.e., a temporary state occupied by souls who have died in a state of grace, but who still need to purge themselves of the residual effects of their sins.
And while I believe that the doctrine of Purgatory speaks to God’s mercy, justice, and love for all souls, I do not believe that God gives anyone a catechism test at judgment, rewarding those who get every jot and tittle correct with eternal life and condemning anybody who gets even one thing wrong with eternal damnation.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t think doctrine doesn’t matter. Doctrine does matter, because it undergirds and drives behavior. Continue reading

FEAST OF ALL SAINTS: Today the Church celebrates all the saints in Heaven, both the capital-ess Saints who have been beatified or canonized by the church and the multitude of little-ess saints who enjoy the beatific vision without earthly recognition.

OPERATION KAYLA MUELLER: On October 26, 2019, approximately fifty U.S. soldiers assigned to Delta Force and the 75th Ranger Regiment flew into Idlib, Syria on six MH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. The Special Operations soldiers isolated the target compound and engaged in a brief firefight with enemy forces.
Al-Baghdadi grabbed his three children and ran into a dead-end tunnel where he detonated a suicide vest he had been wearing, killing himself and the children.
“He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming,” Trump said. “The thug who tried so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear, panic and dread – terrified of the American Forces bearing down.” Continue reading

CHRISTIANS DON’T JUST HAVE TO FORGIVE: We also have to apologize – I hate confrontation, but my pastor had really hurt my feelings and I thought I should tell him how I felt. I remember screwing up my courage to MAX and going him, saying what I had to say as calmly as I could and asking for an apology.
He crossed his arms, tipped his head back, looked down his nose at me and said, “I don’t have to apologize for anything. You’re a Christian. You just have to forgive me.”
That felt so WRONG, but I couldn’t answer him. So I set out on a Bible study and found a definitive answer, straight from Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
“Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” – Matt 5:23-24
Sadly, I have never once heard a single teaching or homily on this. I’m thinking maybe people miss the significance of this passage because it says “be reconciled with” instead of “apologize and make amends to.”
It seems to get interpreted as “you have to forgive your brother before you come to the altar.” Now that may be true also, but it’s not what Jesus was saying.
Forgiving is something you do to a person who has harmed you. A person who has something against you is someone you have harmed. That means you need to seek out the person you harmed and apologize and make amends before going to the altar.
