If it comes from Pew, a demo biased group, the truth must be much different.
And that must be an old poll. The questions were when the dems controlled the house. And Democrats STILL had no clue who was holding the purse strings.
Gee what a surprise.

Only the top one is recent. The other two I harvested from Chrissy’s Site Bites, because they fit and I’d never posted them here before. And I admit, I did not look up the demographics. I was not aware Pew had a problem with that. I’ll go snoop now.

Okay … got the data on the sample Pew used for the TOP poll on political party knowledge. These questions were about things like “Which party is generally more supportive of gay rights?” and “Which party does John Boehner belong to?” Complete report is posted @

Democrats appear to have been undersampled, Indepenents oversampled, Republicans about right. If I got this right, I don’t understand the MOE numbers in the data. It seems like they should be highest for the one that is farthest off (Democrat) and lowest for the one that is closest (Republican). They’re the opposite. And the Dem and Ind are the same, but their difference from Gallup’s numbers are not. (Ind 4.8 v Dem 6.6).
Sample size: 1,000 = 100% Party Affiliation Pew MOE
March 29-April 1, 2012 March 8-11 4.0% overall
Republicans: 239 = 26.2% 27% 7.5% GOP
Democrats: 334 = 36.6% 30% 6.5% Dem
Independents: 340 = 37.2% 42% 6.5% Ind
(9% gave no answer to party preference)
If I counted right, there were 18 questions and, if I did the math right, Republicans did 6.6% better than Democrats. The difference in knowledge is within the MOE, thus relatively meaningless. However, other polls seem to consistently show that more conservative people are generally better informed.
Besides, I just did these graphics to rag on Democrats and toot raspberries at the Democrat Media Complex’s “We’re the SMART ones” meme.
