The Unemployment Rate Bait-and-Switch

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has been calculating the Unemployment Rate every month since January 1948. During Bill Clinton’s first year in office, his administration cooked up a new category called Discouraged Workers (jobless American who want work, but have stopped looking because the job market is so bad). Since January 1994, the BLS has been EXCLUDING these jobless workers from the official Unemployment Rate.

BLS Compl Hist Unemployment Rate 1948 to 2013

Common sense would dictate that Discouraged Workers be tracked as a subset of the Unemployed, not excluded like they were somehow not unemployed anymore. But since when do Democrats ever use common sense? Clinton’s statistical chicanery has had a really screwy side-effect that Democrats exploit to their political benefit:

  • When the economy is BAD, more people become discouraged enough to quit looking so the BLS moves them from Unemployed to Discouraged. Net result: The Unemployment Rate goes DOWN.
  • When the economy IMPROVES, more people become encouraged enough to start looking for work again so the BLS moves them from Discouraged to Unemployed. Net result: The Unemployment Rate goes UP.

This allows the Lamestream Media to spin the monthly jobless reports in a way that most benefits Democrats. Since it’s been Obama in the Oval Office during our latest period of historically bad joblessness, the MSM trumpets each “improved” Unemployment Rate report as yet another sign of Teh Won’s wonderfulness.

And if you happen to mention that Obama is the first president to create more than a MILLION jobless workers too depressed to get off the couch, then you’re a dirty RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST TEA BAGGER

BLS Compl Hist Discouraged Wkrs 1994 - 2013

If the economy were to improve under Obama (not holding my breath), the Unemployment Rate would rise, at which point the talking heads would carefully explain to us at great length and with lots of experts and charts that it was because Discouraged Workers were now re-entering the job market, so woohoo Obama!

BLS: Unemployment Rate @ http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000.

The official (but faux) “total unemployment” rate used for media and political sound bytes and headlines. This statistic is reported as a percent of the employable population, which includes civilian, non-institutionalized Americans ages 16 and over, so basically not soldiers, jailbirds or children. The total employable population number changes.

BLS: Discouraged Workers @ http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNU05026645.

This statistic is reported as an actual number of individuals, not as a percent of employable population, making it very difficult to correlate with the Unemployment Rate.

NOTE: These time series pages are easy to use, but really hard to find at the BLS website. If you want to access them again, bookmark them.

I’m for more guns, thank you very much

2013: Twelve people were gunned down on a Navy base by a well-armed BAD GUY because the GOOD GUYS had no way to stop him.

1993: President Clinton barred members of the military, including officers, from carrying firearms on military bases.

Everybody in the military is not only vetted and well-trained in the use of firearms, but also has taken a solemn oath to put their own lives on the line to protect and defend others.

But they aren’t allowed to carry firearms on base?!?!

Gun control laws are not about reducing gun violence.

They are about disarming law-abiding citizens.

In 1976, Washington, D.C. imposed the strictest gun control law in the nation.

It prohibited anyone other than law-enforcement officers from carrying a firearm in the city. Residents were even barred from keeping guns in their homes for self-defense.

By disarming law-abiding citizens, lawmakers EMBOLDENED criminals!

  • DC homicides in 1975: 188
  • DC homicides in 1988: 369
  • DC homicides in 1993: 454.

In 2011, the state with the strongest gun control laws had more than THREE times the gun murder rate of the state with the weakest gun control laws. In DC, it was TWELVE times higher.

CALIFORNIA: Strongest Gun Control State 3.25 gun murders per 100,000 people.

UTAH: Weakest Gun Control Law State: 0.97 gun murders per 100,000 people.

WASHINGTON D.C.: Model Gun Control City: 12 gun murders per 100,000 people.

2011 Gun control laws increase gun violence

Clearly, people are going to have guns no matter how much you tell them it’s wrong, so let’s junk all that useless legislation and focus on teaching our young people to use their guns safely and responsibly.

We could start in elementary school with age-appropriate lessons about how you should not let anyone make you feel bad about your trigger finger but that you should never point a gun at anyone until you’re really ready.

Older kids would learn what the parts of a gun look like and how to clean, oil, assemble and safely carry one’s weapon. This would naturally include a lesson on how to properly rubber-band a condom on the barrel to keep water out. (For the sake of the children of gun-prudish Progressives, we could have the condom part demonstrated with a banana instead of a real gun.)

There would also be field trips to gun stores to see the wonderful array of possibilities that await the eager buyer as soon as s/he comes of age, plus assemblies where members of law enforcement, the military and the hunting and competitive shooting communities would come to talk about firearms.

Every high school would have a firing range and passing the gun safety, maintenance and shooting skills class would be mandatory before graduation unless the child’s parents filed a protest with the courts citing their rights under the Constitution to raise their children according to their absurd gun-prudish moral codes.

We could start somewhere small … say Washington, D.C. … and watch what happens to those gun crimes statistics. You know, the way they did with Charter Schools.

What he said

Jesus never said

The Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage was the topic on Sunday’s Meet the Press.

At the table discussing the issue, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow suggested that social conservatives have sought for a generation to demean gay Americans.

“Gay people, there’s nothing that we can do that make more or less of us exist,” Maddow said. “And you’ve been arguing for a generation that public policy ought to essentially demean gay people as a way of expressing disapproval. But you don’t make any less of us exist.”

Shooting back against this assertion, founder and chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition Ralph E. Reed, pointed to the hypocrisy just a decade ago among Democrats who voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act.

“This suggestion that because somebody wants to affirm the institution of marriage that they’re ipso-facto intolerant, by that argument, Barack Obama was intolerant 14 months ago,” Reed said.

“By that argument, 342 members of the House, 85 members of the Senate… Bill Clinton, who signed it into law, were intolerant and motivated by an animus and a hatred for gays.”

“Were they bigots?” he asks.

Body Language at the Bush Library dedication

2013_04 25 Body Language at Bush Library dedication

MIRRORING – When one person copies another, it is called mirroring. It often means the two people are in synch with one another.

  • Bill, Dubya and HW: When a self-confident person puts his hands in his pockets, it may indicate he is uncomfortable with the people around him. Unless his hands are cold or his joints ache, HW’s hand clasp is likely a wheelchair appropriate variation on his son’s hands in pockets gesture. All three men appear to be avoiding eye contact with the three Big Losers in the room. And lest anyone think this is partisan or racist, Clinton is a Democrat and Carter is white.
  • Barack and Michelle: Crossed arms are usually associated with self-protection, indicating the person feels threatened (unless they’re just cold).

PROXIMITY – For Americans, it is appropriate for friends and associates to space themselves 18″ to 4′ apart and create an open circle while talking.

  • Because there is clearly a photographer in the room, the open semi-circle from Barbara to Dubya is appropriate. Barack’s position in this semi-circle deliberately excludes Carter. Carter’s loose arms and big smile suggest he may be too dim-witted to get that his fellow Democrat is belittling him.
  • Former First Ladies – Three of them aren’t even in the picture. Michelle is scowling and pouting. Only the supremely self-confident and wry Babsy Bush is smiling and has positioned her body to relate appropriately with her husband, son and Clinton.

Consider your news source

If you think Republican leadership is to blame for the bad economy, consider your news source please. The MSM is in the tank for the Democrats. They’ve been lying to the public for years.

Bragging on budget

The red is when we had Republicans controlling 2 or 3 of the three budget and policy-making bodies (Senate, House, White House). Blue is when we had Democrats controlling 2 or 3 of these three.

Great Moments in the History of the Democrat Party

In 1838, Democrat Presidents Andrew Jackson and his successor Martin Van Buren herded Indians into camps, tormented them, burned and pillaged their homes and forced them to relocate with minimal supplies. Thousands died along what is now known as the Trail of Tears.

In 1860, the pro-slavery faction of the Democrat Party responded to Republican Abraham Lincoln’s presidential election by seceding from the union. This led directly to the Civil War.

In 1865, Democrat Nathan Bedford Forrest and 5 other Confederate Democrats formed the first Ku Klux Klan.

In 1868, Democrat President Andrew Johnson became the first of only two American presidents (both Democrats) to be impeached. He was acquitted by the Senate, falling a single vote short of the necessary 2/3 needed to remove him from office.   < Alert Reader Hubby pointed out I got this one way wrong and should just delete it as, for anyone who knows American History, it’s not a good example anyway. I’m glad one of us did not snooze through American History!

In 1868, Democrats in Opelousas, Louisiana killed nearly 300 Blacks who tried to foil an assault on a Republican newspaper editor.

In 1917 and following: The Democrat Attorney General of the U.S. boasted that the American Protective League (a Democrat-founded and Democrat-sponsored group of private vigilantes) provided him with “several hundred thousand private citizens … keeping an eye on disloyal individuals and making reports of disloyal utterances.” In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan recruited members from the Southern branches of the APL.

From 1919-1921: Under Democrat President Woodrow Wilson and his Democrat Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, hundreds of foreign citizens were rounded up in and deported for allegedly being political threats to America.

In 1922, a Republican introduced a bill in Congress that would have made lynching a federal crime. Filibustering Senate Democrats killed the measure.

From 1947-1972, Democrats in Alabama knowing withheld penicillin from Black participants in the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment. As a result, a number of the subjects needlessly infected their loved ones and died, after they could have been cured.

In 1942, Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order that led to more than 100,000 Japanese Americans being put into bleak, remote internment camps surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards for the duration of World War II.

In 1950, Alger Hiss was proven to have been a Soviety spy. Hiss had helped advise FDR at Yalta and was strongly defended by Left-wing liberals until the Verona papers proved conclusively he was guilty.

In 1960, the West Virgina Democrat primary was rigged by John F. Kennedy. The Wall Street Journal investigated, found proof that Kennedy had bought the votes he needed to win the nomination, then buried the story for decades.

In 1961, after training a Cuban militia to overthrow Castro, Democrat President John F. Kennedy got cold feet and didn’t give the men all the air support they were promised. As a result, they were easily defeated by Castro’s men at the Bay of Pigs.  The failed invasion strengthened the brutal regime of the anti-American dictator Fidel Castro.

In 1963, Democrat Bull Connor used attack dogs and fire hoses on children and teenagers marching for civil rights. Democrat George Wallace declared his commitment to “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”

In 1964, Democrat President Lyndon Johnson dramatically escalated our troops’ presence in Vietnam while he simultaneously put political restrictions in place that made the war unwinnable. As a result, 58,000 Americans died in a pointless conflict.

In 1969, the Democrats’ beloved “Liberal Lion” of the Senate, Ted Kennedy ran off the road into a tidal pool with passenger Mary Jo Kopechne in the car. Kennedy swam free, leaving Mary Jo trapped inside the car, where she suffocated slowly. Kennedy spent the next 9 hours plotting how he would spin the accident to the press and save his political career.

In 1975, Democrats abandoned our allies in the elected government of South Vietnam, which was quickly overrun by the dictatorial Communists in the North.

From 1979-1981, after Democrat President abandoned our ally in the Shah of Iran, radical Islamists took over the government and held 52 Americans hostage. Carter made only one disastrous rescue attempt. The hostages were not released until one minute after Republican Ronald Reagan replaced Carter as POTUS.

In 1996, Democrat President Bill Clinton turned down the opportunity to capture Osama Bin Laden, although he knew that bin Laden planned to commit crimes against America.

In 1998, Democrat President Bill Clinton became the second of only two American presidents (both Democrats) to be impeached. The Senate was split 50-50, so failed to achieve the 2/3 needed to remove him from office.

In 2011, the United States received its first less-than-AAA credit rating in nearly 100 years.

UPDATE TWO: Alert Mormon Reader Angelaisms emailed this bit of history previously unknown to moi:

A lesser known but still important addition to this list: The persecution faced by the early members of the LDS Church was decidedly illegal — raping, pillaging, murdering, assaulting, false imprisonment, etc. Appeals to local governments were largely fruitless. I think it was after the LDS people had been chased out of Missouri by (Democrat) Gov. Lilburn Bogg’s Extermination Order (which, incidentally, was repealed with apology… in 1979) and had settled in Illinois that Joseph Smith took his case to Washington DC, begging President Martin Van Buren for help — my timeline is a little sketchy.

But I do know that, when that went down, Van Buren turned a deaf ear to his pleas. Joseph Smith was eventually jailed in Illinois on and murdered in prison by a mob of men with painted faces; the mob was later exonerated in a kangaroo court, and the LDS people had to flee the United States for the Mexican territory (Utah) shortly thereafter. So, well done President Van Buren.

Surely the persecution faced by the Mormons in Missouri had NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the fact that they were abolitionists. /sarc Don’t get me wrong; there were jerks on my side too. But even if they were ALL jerks, they still deserved the protection of the law.
