Re-thinking the seven-year treaty

Everywhere I’ve looked, the “firm covenant” in Daniel 9 is interpreted to mean Anti-Christ will make a seven-year peace treaty with Israel.*

Here is the pertinent section of the passage:

The people of a leader who will come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. His end shall come in a flood; until the end of the war, which is decreed, there will be desolation. For one week** he shall make a firm covenant with the many; half the week he shall abolish sacrifice and offering. In their place shall be the desolating abomination until the ruin that is decreed is poured out upon the desolator.  Daniel 9:26-27

Here is what I see:

The Anti-Christ will confirm a seven-year contract of some kind with some group called “the many.” Three and a half years later, his followers will destroy Jerusalem and desecrate the Third Temple.*** Between this destruction and the end of the Last War (commonly called Armageddon), the Anti-Christ will rule and things will be really bad for God’s people. The Anti-Christ will set himself up as god, but his ruin will come very quickly (“in a flood”) at the end.

I have two problems with the interpretation I mentioned above. One is with designating the covenant specifically as a peace treaty. The text isn’t that specific.

Covenant (noun): An agreement. Synonyms: contract, agreement, undertaking, commitment, guarantee, warrant, pledge, promise, bond, indenture.

Confirm (transitive verb): 1. To support or establish the certainty or validity of; verify, make valid or binding by a formal or legal act; ratify. N.b., some translations say “confirm a covenant”, but this means the same thing as “make a firm covenant.”

My other problem with the interpretation is in designating that “the many” must be the nation of Israel. I can find nothing in the text to support this. Based on Revelation 17, I think it’s more likely that “the many” is the United Nations.****

Dan 9 and Rev 17 The Many

Notes:

*So far as I know, the Catholic Church has no teaching on this.

** Often in Bible prophecy, a “day” means a year while a “week” means a period of seven years.

***The Third Temple must be rebuilt before Anti-Christ can desecrate and destroy it. And the traditional schedule of sacrifices and offerings must be renewed before Anti-Christ can abolish them. Everything is literally in place to both build a new Temple and start up the sacrifices and offerings. All that’s needed is for someone to identify the site where the First and Second Temples were truly located.

****See https://polination.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/the-great-harlot-vs-babylon-the-mother-of-harlots/ for a fuller explanation of my interpretation of “the many.”

Rabbi Kaduri, Ariel Sharon and the End of Time

The Rabbi Who Found Messiah [5:52]

OCTOBER 2005: Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri, a lifelong legend in the Jewish community, announced on Yom Kippur (Oct 12-13, 2005),

I have met the Messiah. He has appeared to me in a vision. He has attached his soul to a particular person in Israel. I will spend this day teaching you how to recognize the Messiah, for He shall appear soon. You must be ready for His coming. Many events of awe will take place before His coming … but they will happen quickly. … I must tell you something disturbing. I have no specific information to give you on the following matter other than what I am about to share with you now,” he also said. “The Messiah has revealed to me that He will not present Himself until after the death of our prime minister, Ariel Sharon.”

JANUARY 2006: Twelve weeks later, Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke (Jan 4, 2006) and was left in a permanent vegetative state. Twenty-four days later, Rabbi Kaduri died (Jan 28, 2006).

JANUARY 2007: Rabbi Kaduri left a hand-written note to be opened a year after his death. It read, “ירים העם ויוכיח שדברו ותורתו עומדים” (translated as “he will raise the people and confirm that his word and law are standing”), which by acronym, suggested the name Yehoshua, which is the Hebrew name for Jesus.

JANUARY 2014: After eight years and eight days in a coma, Ariel Sharon died (Jan 11, 2014).

About the numbers I highlighted:

TWO: Difference, division or double portion. E.g., Old Testament (Jew) and New Testament (Gentile). For Christians, Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, plus his human and divine natures.
EIGHT: Salvation, resurrection, and new birth/regeneration.
TWELVE: Perfection of church and government.
TWENTY-FOUR: Twelve times Two = Perfection of God’s kingdom, the coming together of Jew and Gentile in Yeshua Messiah.

Selective outrage explained

The Progs true Jefe is Satan. He doesn’t give a crap one way or the other what anyone does to sinners, because they already belong to him. His target is God and those God loves. God loves the Jews, so any nation that wants to annihilate Israel can do whatever it pleases to gays, but a devout Christian like Phil Robertson must be destroyed.

Politically Incorrect Outrage Meter

The same morality prevails with regard to racism, feminism and abortion. God loves children, so abortion must, more than anything else, be legal and lots. Safe? Meh. Satan doesn’t care if women are butchered. He also doesn’t care if the majority of aborted babies are black and/or female. Therefore, his followers don’t care.

Disgraceful behavior at Temple Mount

I found the article below at the Jerusalem Post. I hope you’ll take the time to read it. Bolding added by CtH.

Rights to the Temple Mount By David Kirshenbaum – October 15, 2013

http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Op-Ed-Contributors/Rights-to-the-Temple-Mount-328803

It is time the police start enforcing the most basic of religious rights, for Jews as well as Muslims.

In a democracy that prides itself on upholding free religious expression, incitement, intimidation and the use of deadly violence to prevent such free expression should not be tolerated, and certainly not rewarded. It shouldn’t matter whether the violence is engaged in by members of the majority religion or by members of a religious minority.

Sadly, this principle is not followed in the State of Israel.

Judaism’s holiest site for over 3,000 years has been the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is on the Temple Mount that both the First and Second Temples stood, where millions of Jews from all over the Israel and the Diaspora made the three Festival Pilgrimages and where, according to Jewish belief, the Third Temple, ushering in the days of the Messiah, is destined to be built. Throughout history, wherever Jews were engaged in prayer, they faced Jerusalem. And in Jerusalem, they pray in the direction of the Temple Mount.

Yet, even though the State of Israel is in full control of Jerusalem, Jews, Christians and all non-Muslims are forbidden entry to the Temple Mount, except during very limited hours. And during those few hours, Jews can only walk in near silence; they may not pray.

A member of the Wakf, the Muslim religious council, monitors the movements of Jewish visitors, and the Israel Police will arrest any Jew upon a complaint by a Wakf member that a Jew was praying on the Temple Mount.

This happened to me and my daughter when we visited the Temple Mount the day before her wedding.

Her swaying in silent meditation was enough to anger our Wakf monitor and land us in the police station for hours for threatening the public welfare.

Any discussion of changing this woeful crushing of religious freedom elicits threats of severe violence from the Wakf, Arab Knesset members and the Islamic Movement in Israel. This incitement works wonders, as Israeli law enforcement officials regularly cite these threats in defending their discriminatory treatment of Jews on the Temple Mount.

During Jewish holiday periods, the level of incitement is raised, often accompanied by the hurling of blocks of stone at Jews on the Temple Mount and at Jewish worshipers in the Western Wall Plaza.

This pattern repeated itself during the this past Succot.

Israeli police responded in the way they always do: They did not stand up to the violent lawbreakers and protect the basic religious rights of law-abiding Jews. Nor did they take the less challenging but less equitable option of closing down the Temple Mount to all.

While this would have unfairly punished Jewish worshipers, including Muslims in the ban might have at least served as a deterrence to future violence.

Some price would have been paid by the perpetrators of religious terror.

Instead, the police took the path that requires the least work, elicits the least resistance, and results in the greatest inequity. On three of the Festival days, police closed the Temple Mount, not to Muslims, but only to Jews and other non-Muslims. Hate and violence were rewarded.

On a recent post-Succot visit to the Temple Mount – I was one of those turned away during the holiday – the group of Jews I was with had to wait an hour until we were allowed in. The police felt unable to deal with more than 25 identifiably Jewish visitors at a time. While we waited for police approval, hundreds of tourists, mostly from Europe, flowed in without a problem.

When we finally entered, we were immediately greeted by taunting screams from tens of Arab women. The harassment of Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount is part of their daily routine. Our group was led by Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, a member of the battalion of Paratroopers that liberated the Old City and the Temple Mount in the Six Day War.

Almost immediately, and frequently during the visit, Rabbi Ariel was spoken to rudely by the police, who didn’t like where he was standing or how fast or slow he was moving. At the end of the visit, as were exiting, Rabbi Ariel, who is 74 and battling cancer, was arrested and roughed up in the process.

What enraged the police and the Wakf was that Rabbi Ariel purportedly bowed down in a form of prayer.

The fear that the police have of the Arabs on the Temple Mount is palpable. When we were verbally assaulted by the Arabs upon our entry, the police made not the slightest effort to quiet them, this in marked distinction from their immediate and angry silencing of any form of Jewish prayer. Rather, their response was to quickly move us past the hateful bigots. And when we were again cursed near the end of our visit, the sole and frightened response of the police was to ask us to leave.

It is time the police start enforcing the most basic of religious rights, for Jews as well as Muslims, that our law enforcement authorities cease cowering in the face of Arab violence and stop their shameful hiding behind Muslim religious terror as an excuse for their failure to uphold the law.

Pondering Prophecy: The Firm Covenant

“For one week he shall make a firm covenant with the many;

Half the week he shall abolish sacrifice and offering;

In their place shall be the desolating abomination

until the ruin that is decreed is poured out upon the desolator.”

Daniel 9:27

All the analyses I’ve looked at interpret this to mean that Israel will make a 7-year peace treaty with her neighbors, but I don’t see that in the text.

“One week” is a common Bible prophecy term for seven years, so I have no problem with that. However, a “firm covenant” is not specifically a “peace treaty.”

FIRM: Solidly in place and stable; having steady but not excessive power or strength.

Synonyms: Stable, steady, steadfast, resolved, wholehearted, secure, resolute, unwavering, committed.

COVENANT: Agreement; legal contract.

Synonyms: Commitment, contract, guarantee, pledge, promise, pact, deal, arrangement, agreement, undertaking, understanding.

Also, I don’t see the text saying Israel will make a treaty with her neighbors. If you look at the structure of the passage, “he” refers to “the desolator”, not to Israel. Therefore, the agreement will not be made by Israel, but by the Anti-Christ.

As for “the many”, there’s no indication in the surrounding text who that refers to, but it could refer to “the great harlot who lives near the many waters” (Revelation 17:1). The angel tells John, “The waters that you saw where the harlot lives represent large numbers of peoples, nations, and tongues” (Revelation 17:15).

I’m thinking it’s possible, even likely, that “the many” is the United Nations in New York City. Not only is this a place of many waters where large numbers of peoples, nations, and tongues reside, but also it is a place where nations routinely gather to make “firm covenants” with each other.

———-

For the Record:

The Catholic Bible (New American Bible Revised Edition) footnotes this passage entirely as a prophecy that was fulfilled in 70 AD.

* [9:27] One week: the final phase of the period in view, the time of Antiochus’ persecution. He: Antiochus himself. The many: the faithless Jews who allied themselves with the Seleucids; cf. 1 Mc 1:11–13. Half the week: three and a half years; the Temple was desecrated by Antiochus from 167 to 164 B.C. The desolating abomination: see note on 8:13; probably a pagan altar. Jesus refers to this passage in his prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem in Mt 24:15.

I believe the Mt 24:15 reference has been misinterpreted. The surrounding text in Matthew 24 makes it very clear that Jesus was talking about the Great Tribulation at the end of all time, not the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Look at the line right before it:

Matt 24:14 – “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.”

The gospel had not been preached to all nations in 70 AD. It has been now.

Is the 7-year treaty coming?

This year’s United Nations General Assembly opened on September 17 and will close on October 1.

Item 99 on the UNGA Agenda: General and complete disarmament

(v) Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (resolution 67/54);

On September 12, 2013, Haaretz reported:

With Moscow and Washington now discussing a diplomatic deal that would rid Syria of its chemical weapons, officials in Jerusalem are preparing for the possibility that Israel will be asked to submit to supervision of the chemical weapons that foreign reports say it possesses. Israel signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in 1993, but never ratified it. Consequently, it hasn’t agreed to submit itself to international inspections or to refrain from steps that would violate the convention.

On September 14, 2013, the United Nations announced:

It has received all documents necessary for Syria to join the Chemical Weapons Convention starting on Oct. 14, 2013.

Also on UNGA Agenda:

Item 99: General and complete disarmament

(u) Treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices (resolution 67/53).

On September 18, 2013, a high-level statement came out of Iran:

It said the country’s new leaders want to compromise in negotiations over its WMD programs. Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, told NBC News that Iran would never “seek weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons” and that he had “full power and complete authority” to make a nuclear deal with the West when he goes to the United Nations next week.

The debt bomb is ticking down to zero

The U.S. Treasury says FedGov is out of funds, so NATURALLY, Obama decided it was high time we sent the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank half a Billion dollars.

He had to circumvent Congress (again) to do it, which the lapdog media ignored (of course) and you can bet the money will wind up going to Iranian-backed Hamas terrorists, but what the hey. According to Obama, it was “necessary” for our “national security interests.” Riiiiiiiight.

His Secretary of State, John Kerry, thinks half a Billion wasn’t enough; he wants we should give those who live to wipe the U.S. and Israel off the face of the Earth a cool $4 Billion … yet the White House remains closed to tourists and my military kid’s been furloughed because … refer back to line one … the United States is BROKE.

But again, what the hey!  We should just raise the debt ceiling again. Right? And if those Eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil Raaaaaaaaaaaacist GOP bastards won’t vote for it, Barack Obama is prepared to NOT send Social Security checks to the disabled and old folks next week. So there!

Meanwhile, he and the girls are packing for yet ANOTHER multi-million dollar vacay cuz apparently their $100 million safari wasn’t enough of a break for one summer.

JUBILEE

When God gave His chosen people the land He had promised them, He told them it was intended to stay in the families to which it had originally been allotted. Recognizing that sometimes folks would need to get their hands on their land equity, He set up a system of land leasing by which outsiders could take possession for a fixed period of time. The value of the lease was based on the value of the harvests left before the next JUBILEE year, when all Jews were commanded by God to return to and again take possession of the land He had given their ancestors.

JUBILEE happened every 50 years by God’s decree:

Leviticus 25:10 “You shall treat this fiftieth year as sacred. You shall proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a JUBILEE for you, when each of you shall return to your own property, each of you to your own family.”

The other day, I was reading about the Balfour Declaration and the Battle of Jerusalem and realized they fit the Leviticus definition of JUBILEE.

The Balfour Declaration: November 2, 1917

“You shall proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants.”

The Balfour Declaration was a letter from the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary to a leader of the British Jewish community. In it, the British government declared its intention to help the Jews return to their land. It was published in the press on November 9, 1917.

The Battle of Jerusalem: November 17 to December 30, 1917

“It shall be a JUBILEE for you, when each of you shall return to your own property.”

In 70 AD, Roman troops booted the Jews out of Jerusalem and trashed the place. In 314 AD, it passed peacefully from pagan into Christian hands when the Emperor Constantine converted. A few centuries later, Muslims grabbed it and more or less held on to it until World War I when British forces, under the command of General Edmund Allenby, captured Jerusalem from the Ottoman Turks. When Allenby entered the Old City for the first time, he went in on foot through the Jaffa Gate to show respect for the place that is holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims the world over.

Note: The Jews themselves do not celebrate JUBILEE at this time. I’m just going by what I see in key historical events and the text of Leviticus. However, if you continue with my reasoning below, I think you’ll be as intrigued and eyebrow elevated as I was when it all came together!

100 years in modern Israel

JUBILEE ONE: Hebrew year 5678

Common calendar: September 17, 1917 to September 6, 1918

  • Balfour Declaration and Battle of Jerusalem
  • THIRTY years later: Hebrew year 5708
  • Common calendar: September 15, 1947 to October 3, 1948
  • Yom Ha’atzmaut or Israeli Independence Day. On Iyar 5, 5708 (May 14, 1948 in the common calendar), David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the independent Jewish State of Israel.
  • Luke 3:23 “When Jesus began his ministry he was about THIRTY years of age.”

JUBILEE TWO = Hebrew Year 5728

Common calendar: October 5, 1967 – September 22, 1968

United Nations Resolution 242 (November 22, 1967) In the aftermath of the Six-Day War of 1967, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 242, which states that war is an unacceptable way for nations to acquire new territory and that Muslims and Jews need to work for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. It called for Israel to remove its troops from the territories they had won during the Six-Day War and for all parties to stop claiming they had any right to stomp on the “sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence” of any of the other parties. On May 1, 1968, Israel accepted it and stated its willingness “to seek agreement with each Arab State on all matters included.”

JUBILEE THREE = Hebrew Year 5778

Common calendar: September 21, 2017 to September 9, 2018

  • 70 years after Israel became an independent nation again: Jubilee Three
  • 70 years after Jesus was born: Roman troops sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple

With all this evidence, I’m thinking my little JUBILEE idea might be legit, in which case … everything points to 5778 (September 21, 2017 to September 9, 2018) being a year of TREMENDOUS significance for Israel.
