That Reminds Me

On yesterday’s post about the wrong words to songs, Mindful said this:

I actually saw the Kingsmen in the early 70s (whatever the lineup was by then) at a friend’s college homecoming. In the acoustically awful gym. With it cranked up too high to make out the words. So it was perfect Louie Louie.

That got me to thinking of my first concert. It was in 1965.My friend from 4H invited me to come with his family to the Rockford YWCA to see a Chicago band named The New Colony Six.It was in the gym and the band was on the stage, dressed in their Paul Revere and the Raider-type outfits. There were a number of Chicago bands who had local hits, like the Buckinghams and the Cryan Shames.Everybody knew the big time bands, like Chicago(originally Chicago Transit Authority, whose first gig was at bar near where I lived called the Cinnamon Cinder in 1967)and,of course,Styx.Any group who had a record tried to get it played on the midwest powerhouse,WLS 890AM.I started listening to it on my 6 transistor radio when I was about 13.
The only bands I heard in college were REO Speedwagon, all music students from the University of Illinois, who were doing a gig at the National Guard Armory with The Chambers Brothers. We also saw a texas band called Bloodrock.I was dating a girl who was a senior at Northern Illinois University in 1972 and she was on the ticket committee. They had mini-concerts,with the likes of Joan Baez and Mountain(Mississippi Queen).
The big concert was held at the NIU Fieldhouse and starred Reginald Dwight…also known as Elton John.It was just before his Honky Chateau album came out.I got to go to the after-party(at the Holiday Inn,where else?) and never heard anybody swear as much as Elton did. There was so much pot being smoked at the concert you could get a contact high.
Those were great times.A lot of happy memories of where you were and what you were doing when you first heard a song.It was fun.Surfin’,hot rods, losing a girlfriend,Motown, all harmless and it made you feel better about everything. So sad that what passes for music today celebrates violence, the degradation of women and blatant drug use.You don’t hold somebody when you dance. The dances today are close to what we used to call foreplay.
I would be remiss not to mention Rockford’s own hometown heroes,Cheap Trick.Rick Neilsen’s parents were both music teachers and owned the biggest music store in town.I remember sitting across the street on a Saturday afternoon watching a big U-Haul being loaded with amps and equipment from the store. At that time, their name was The Fuse.I actually had a music appreciation class at Rock Valley Junior College with Nielsen.I worked my tail off,got a “C”.He showed up for class about twice and aced it.Go figure. The drummer,Bun E. Carlos,(real name:Brad Carlson) went to Harlem High School with my child bride. He was class of 1967,same as her.
Times change, music changes.I haven’t listened to music since the hair metal days of the 80’s.(yeah,I listened to disco in the 70’s,but I won’t admit it.)but it is what it is,I guess. My grandkids think I’m a little strange, but their grandkids will probably think the same thing.

I Hate It When They Get the Words Wrong

In full disclosure, I am an aging (far from gracefully) veteran of the garage band wars of the mid-60’s to early 70’s. There has always been a lot of songs with words few people, if any, got right. It never seemed to matter much, though. If we had a request for a song that I didn’t know all the words to, I’d make sure the guitars and drums played loud enough that I could just yell something unintelligible into the microphone.
Probably the most notorious song for getting it wrong was “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen. Everybody thought the lyrics were filthy but I saw an interview once with the actual band members who explained what was really said.
All things considered, as an old rocker I’m totally put off by the garbage they call music these days. I always figured I had a pretty firm grip on the English language, but I listen to that rap crap and I can only pick out a word here and there. To me, it all sounds the same, so who’s to say what’s good and what isn’t? I suppose it all depends on what you grew up with. At least our music had instruments… and harmony… and melody… and no rap.

THIS IS THE FIRST SONG EVERY BAND LEARNED. THERE ARE ONLY 3 CHORDS.

AND NOW THE REST OF THE STORY

One of my favorite movies is Bull Durham, starring Kevin Costner, that bug-eyed harpy Susan Saran Wrap, and her former boy toy Tiny Tim Robbins. I especially liked this clip, since I used to sing “Try A Little Tenderness.” A great song.

This has been one of those posts with no redeeming social values that I’m famous for.

What You Need to Know About APEC

Short answer: absolutely nothing.
The world leaders and a bunch of wanna-be’s met yesterday in Lima Peru. It was Obama’s last opportunity to play the big shot. Being so full of himself and detached from reality he never realized the real leaders of the world viewed him as a pathetic joke… a poser… a stooge to get a lot of taxpayer money from.
I am listing a series of videos, none longer than a minute or two. No particular reason, just another instance of napping too much during the day and not sleeping at night. I get up early every day anyway, so it’s not that big a deal.

Added by CtH: I grabbed a frame of the hand shake to get a closer look at their body language.  It looks to me as if Obama didn’t even grant Putin the courtesy of facing him while shaking his hand.  I’ve seen this “I’m not interested in you” behavior before.  It’s rude.  Regardless of what they may have said to each other, Obama deserves Putin’s scowl simply for being such a discourteous boob.

HE JUST CAN’T HELP HIMSELF. DENIGRATING THE COUNTRY RIGHT TO THE BITTER END
The notion of democracy. And rule of law. And a free press. And independent judiciary. And open markets. And a social welfare state to moderate some of the sharp edges of capitalism. And, you know, lifting up issues of human rights and investing in public health and development not just in our own borders but elsewhere in the world. And working with multilateral institutions, like the United Nations, making sure we’re upholding international norms and rules.
This is not the first time the president has criticized his own country while traveling abroad. On Saturday he accused America of sexist banking rules, claiming women were required to have men co-sign loan applications up until 1996.

Classy Mike Pence on Hamilton incident

From Hannity: Vice President Elect Mike Pence is responding to the political lecture he received from the cast of the Broadway show Hamilton on Friday. Pence showed a considerable amount of magnanimity when asked about the incident by Fox News’ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday.

“I did hear what was said from the stage and I can tell you I wasn’t offended by what was said,” Pence said adding, “I’ll leave it to others whether that was the appropriate to say it.”

Pence continued by addressing the central element of the message delivered to him after the performance.

“I just want to reassure people that what president elect Donald Trump said on election night, he absolutely meant from the bottom of his heart,” Pence said. “He is preparing to be the president of all of the people of the United States of America.”

From CtH:  Personally, I thought that an actor publicly shaming a member of his audience from the stage was in atrociously bad taste.  Kudos to Pence for his gracious response and his praise for the show itself.  I especially liked what he said to his daughter and her cousins.  I look forward to having such a class act as VP.  It’ll make a nice change from you know who.
