WHEN HAPPINESS WAS A WARM TOY GUN

I know nobody will read this, but it’s right in my wheelhouse. For many years I was an antique toy dealer, mostly boy’s toys, and am an expert on toy cap guns–hence my nickname.I have done many toy shows, and occasionally some indignant PC mom would sniff that she wouldn’t let HER child play with such violent toys.

My response was usually:

Every kid in the neighborhood had them.We pretended to be our cowboy heroes. Now kids use real guns.

We didn’t need ‘conflict resolution’ or ‘anger management ‘ classes.

Go buy your kid a video game so he can sit and stare at at screen for hours without using his imagination.

  1. I guess I can’t whine about the NYT anymore, they interviewed my daughter for an article on female bike mechanics. That’s her and the newest granddaughter in the top photo:

I love it! Another lady working with tools! Her darling baby will have fun growing up around that business, I bet. I started my business when I was pregnant with my daughter, and she has always been around a lot. She used to love to answer the phone with a grown-up voice, and was actually pretty good once she learned how to write the messages. It makes me smile to think about all the fun those two have ahead of them.

  2. Great articles, Pete. I loved the “Warm Toy Gun” story! I’m forwarding it to a bunch of friends who I know will appreciate it. The Gung Ho Commando Outfit commercial is a hoot!

I liked that “Warm Toy Gun” article in the American Thinker, too. Pete, sometime you should write up all about that Roy Rogers stuff you told me about. I thought it was very interesting, and I bet others would, too.

Many years ago I was a substitute teacher at an all-boys elementary school. There were no toys, but don’t you know, they still knew to use their hands and fingers on the playground to pretend they were shooting the bad guys. There was really no way to stop it, so we didn’t even try, unless they were picking up sticks to use. We just didn’t want them running around with the sticks because the falls were so predictable.

Toy gun discussion reminds me of a 7th Heaven episode.

7th Heaven was unrelentingly PC … often annoying to me how they watered down Christianity to “being nice” but that’s another story.

They did one episode I cheered for. Eric (pc minister dad) was the son of a hard nosed Marine Colonel. One episode, the Colonel bought Eric’s twin boys toy guns and encouraged them to play at war. Eric was APPALLED, but rather than back down to the pc dreck, the Colonel made some very excellent points about how he had respected the “no toy guns” rule with the first 5, who were now mostly grown.

In the episode, the parents and elder children were struggling with some really serious, real world problems. And getting nowhere. The Colonel said the reason was that none of them believed they could effect positive change.

Yeah, duh. My big gripe with that show. They were so doormat, mealy-mouthed, liberal NICE, it was hard to find the warrior Christian anywhere. They didn’t even PRAY over problems, for crying out loud, another gripe I had.

Anyway, the Colonel said he thought this was a real failing in their parenting, that Eric and Annie had been so pc nice about everything, they didn’t believe and had not taught their kids to believe they could be agents for change. He felt that playing war was good for kids. It made them feel confident, to believe in good fighting evil, not just laying down and begging for mercy.

Interestingly, Eric agreed and let the boys keep their guns.

If you loved the show, sorry if my rant rubs you the wrong way. I watched every episode of all eleven seasons, appreciated the healthy family, good marriage, chastity before marriage, pro-life messages. But as I got less liberal and more conservative in my own life, I became more and more bothered by the cafeteria liberal humanist slant of their brand of Christianity. It smelled so much like the people in my church who think my kids torture people because they’re in the military.
