What’s with the Never-Trumpers?

2017_05 22 Smoke by Terrell

Dennis Prager wrote a column at National Review, “Why Conservatives Still Attack Trump”, which says in part:

I have concluded that there are a few reasons that explain conservatives who were Never-Trumpers during the election, and who remain anti-Trump today. The first and, by far, the greatest reason is this: They do not believe that America is engaged in a civil war, with the survival of America as we know it at stake. While they strongly differ with the Left, they do not regard the left–right battle as an existential battle for preserving our nation. On the other hand, I, and other conservative Trump supporters, do.

To my amazement, no anti-Trump conservative writer sees it that way. They all thought during the election, and still think, that while it would not have been a good thing if Hillary Clinton had won, it wouldn’t have been a catastrophe either. That’s it, in a nutshell….

In other words, I believe that Donald Trump may have saved the country. And that, in my book, covers a lot of sins — foolish tweets, included.

William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection has a long piece about what Prager said, how Never Trumpers responded and what his own position is.  It’s interesting reading if you have the time.

Some things belong to Caesar

2017_05 25 Trump honored by pope visit

Stephen P. White writes at the Washington Examiner:

Jesus instructed the Pharisees: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

This is often taken as a warning to rulers who would usurp the things of God and to Christians who would worship political idols.

But it’s also an important reminder that politics deserves its proper autonomy; some things do in fact belong to Caesar.

So, while I applaud the insistence that our faith should inform our politics, none of us should expect the teachings of the faith to do the work of politics for us. The Beatitudes aren’t policy prescriptions.

The Trumps at the Sistine Chapel

The Last Judgment (Italian: Il Giudizio Universale[1]) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo covering the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity.

We Must Pray Daily for President Trump

Pray for Trump

There is a “Bind Trump” movement abroad, started by witches, that encourages people to cast “spells” by arranging a tarot card, photo of Trump, candles, string, and other items in a circle and then asking for the assistance of “demons of the infernal realms” and other spirits.

“As the sacraments have visible signs – for example, bread and wine in the Eucharist – evil spells also have theirs – such as clothing, photos, personal items, and foods – that are cursed by the wizard with formulas and rituals that are intended to produce negative spiritual effects on the persons affected,” the famed late Vatican exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth wrote in An Exorcist Explains the Demonic.

“Prayer can counter evil spells,” Amorth continued, “and if done with faith and love, it reaches its objective, which is the heart of God.”

Sorry, but this bothers me

I don’t care that her pants don’t fit, though I think the UK Daily Mail is absurd to call those pants “glamorous.”  The Obamas are millionaires, so she can easily afford to have her clothes made to fit. But if she chooses to wear uncomfortable, stupid-looking clothes, I guess that’s her business.

I do care, however, that she chose to wore an absurdly inappropriate top to visit the Duomo de Siena (Siena Cathedral).  After all the finger-wagging lectures she and her husband have given the rest of us about tolerance yada yada yada, her top showed remarkably little RESPECT for the traditions of my faith.

FLOTUS is a Roman Catholic

I did not know this!

2017_05 24 Melania visits Pope

A spokeswoman for the first lady said Mrs. Trump’s decision to wear a black lace veil known as a mantilla followed Vatican protocol that women who have an audience with the pope must wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil to cover their head.

In fact, every woman in the U.S. delegation wore a veil, including Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter who converted to Judaism before marriage.

The Vatican’s rules of attire are not strictly enforced. Many women, including high-ranking dignitaries, have visited the pontiff with their heads uncovered, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015 and Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s top civilian leader, this month.

But many women wear veils out of respect. Mrs. Trump is Catholic, which likely made accompanying President Donald Trump for a meeting with the leader of the world’s more than 1 billion Roman Catholics all the more meaningful to her.

When a Vatican official handed her a rosary, the first lady immediately gave it to the pope to bless. She also spent time in front of a statue of the Madonna at the Vatican’s children’s hospital and laid flowers at its feet. She also prayed in the hospital chapel and spoke with the children in Italian.

When former first ladies Truman, Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama visited the pontiff, they likewise respected the Vatican’s request that they wear long sleeves, formal black clothing and a veil.

It has been noted that Mrs. Trump did not wear a hijab or headscarf in Saudi Arabia.  The government did not request that she do so.

In Israel, President Trump donned a yarmulke when he visited the Western Wall, where it is customary, and again at Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial, where it is not required. Trump likely did it out of respect.
