Is Islam more violent?

On September 4, 2014, CNN host Don Lemon hosted a panel to address the topic: “Is Islam more violent than any other faith?” Seriously. He really did that.

One panelist predictably brought up the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition AND the Conquistadors.

Amazingly, Lemon insisted the panel stick to MODERN TIMES.

The Crusades were wars fought in response to MUSLIM AGGRESSION against Christians in the 11th century, which was … let me think … 21 minus 11 … a LONG TIME AGO.

The Spanish Inquisition was also a really LONG TIME AGO; it lasted for 350 years and resulted in the total deaths by legal execution of 3,000 to 5,000 individuals who had been tried in a court, not shot in the face during a home invasion or blown up at their desks.  And … oh yeah … it was also in response to MUSLIM AGGRESSION.

The Conquistadors came to the New World 500 years ago, mostly seeking wealth and glory, not to force non-Christians to convert or die. The missionaries that accompanied them to spread their religion were peaceful men who established schools and stuff.

That poor CNN panel! They were left with nothing but the pathetic “anti-abortion terrorism” argument.

Uh, yeah. No.

Firstly, before blaming violence committed against abortion providers and abortion clinics as due exclusively to some not-Muslim religious motivation, you would have to first demonstrate that the perpetrator was not motivated by either a personal vendetta, insanity or a generalized will to maim and kill.

Hey. Fair is fair. After all, the Lefties said the Fort Hood shooter’s actions were “workplace violence” due to “secondary PTSD”, despite the fact he yelled “Allahu Akbar” while he fired on unarmed office workers and had oodles of extremist Muslim propaganda on his computer.  Those deaths are not included in the Wikipedia list of Islamic Terrorist Attacks that I used for the graphic below, while the Wikipedia list of Anti-Abortion Terrorist Attacks I used admits that the perp in a 1998 clinic bombing is believed to have also bombed Centennial Olympic Park in 1996 which I think seriously calls into question his allegedly “religious” motives for the clinic bombing.

Secondly, before blaming anti-abortion violence on religious zealotry, you would have to demonstrate that the perpetrator(s) of the violence had been motivated exclusively by teachings of an actual religion, in the same sense that Muslim extremists are following specific teachings from the founder of Islam and as laid out in their holiest book, the Koran. Violence perpetrated by disturbed individuals following a cult leader don’t quality.

All the leading religious leaders and pro-life organizations CONDEMN violence, even to stop abortion. But you can find any number of Muslim clerics going Rah Rah about ISIS shooting people in the face and kidnapping their daughters for sex slavery.

ALL that being said, you would still have the teensy weensy problem of BODY COUNT. Even ignoring all deaths in active extremist Muslim aggression war zones, you still have a staggering number of innocent civilian victims of pure, out and out MUSLIM terror.

Go for the gold

Incredible sunset!!

A multimillionaire nearing the end of his life was distraught because he had worked so hard for his wealth and he wanted to be able to take it with him when he died. He prayed and asked God if he could do so.

“Sorry,” God said. “Rules are rules.”

But the man begged and pleaded, and eventually God relented.

“All right, you win,” God said. “I’ll make an exception just this once. You can bring one suitcase.”

Overjoyed, the man took his largest suitcase, filled it with bars of pure gold, and set it beside his bed.

Not long afterward, the man died and arrived at the gates of heaven. St. Peter took one look at the suitcase and said, “You can’t bring that in here.”

The man explained that he had special permission from God. St. Peter was skeptical, but went to check the story out. After a while he returned.

“You’re right,” Peter said. “God says you’re allowed one suitcase. But I’ll have to check its contents before letting it through.”

St. Peter opened the suitcase to inspect the worldly goods that the man had found too precious to leave behind, and said in astonishment, “You brought pavement?”

What’s wrong with the “prosperity gospel”?

What is the Prosperity Gospel

Victoria Osteen said this during a recent Sunday morning service:

I just want to encourage everyone of us to realize when we obey God, we’re not doing it for God – I mean, that’s one way to look at it – we’re doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we’re happy. So I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy. When you come to church, when you worship Him, you’re not doing it for God really. You’re doing it for yourself, because that’s what makes God happy. Amen?”

Victoria Osteen ‘Do Good for Your Own Self,’ Not for God [:37]
Osteen and her husband Joel co-pastor the Houston, Texas, mega Lakewood Church.

Steve Camp, pastor of the Cross Church in Palm City, Florida, says her words are essentially blasphemous.

It’s the age old sin of idolatry – that it’s not about God, it’s about us,” he said. “True worship for the humanist is about how we feel at the end of the day and what gives us meaning, as opposed to what gives God glory.”

“She honestly believes that God exists to make us happy rather than holy,” Camp said. “She honestly believes that worship is about our fulfillment rather than His glory. That’s the bottom issue here.”

First Corinthians so clearly says that whether we eat or drink, do it all to the glory of God. It’s not just self. Jesus said … in Matthew 16, ‘Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Me.’

“The Osteens have just inverted that. They think it’s not the denial of self, but the exaltation of self,” Camp said. “They’re not trying to pursue a cross; they’re trying to pursue prosperity. And they’re certainly not following the biblical Jesus. They’re following whatever brings happiness and contentment.”

Prosperity Gospel dropouts

At Amazon, a reviewer of a Joel Osteen book wrote this:

What is it that draws people to Joel Osteen? Why do people enjoy his teaching so much? After all, tens of thousands of people attend his church each week and hundreds of thousands more watch him on television. He has become one of America’s most popular pastors, even while he teaches things that most pastors would testify are inconsistent with the Bible.

“I think the secret to Osteen’s success is this: he teaches self-help but wraps it in a thin guise of Christian terminology. Thus people believe they are being taught the Bible when the reality is that they are learning mere human wisdom rather than divine wisdom. Osteen cunningly blends the wisdom of this age with language that sounds biblical. He blends the most popular aspects of New Age and self-help teaching with Christianity. And his audience is eagerly drinking this in.”

It’s safe to assume those planes are dropping bombs, firing missiles, the pilots who are flying these missions are risking their lives, and their loved ones waiting at home for them, would probably say the U.S. is at war. As for ISIS (or ISIS/IS), the ruthless murderers have beheaded one American already and they’re threatening to kill more. In fact, ISIS threatened Americans again today while beheading a captured a Kurdish soldier. ISIS appears to be at war with us, but according to the Obama White House, we are not at war with them.

Obama doubles down on religious discrimination

2014_08 22 Obama ups fines on HHS mandate

August 22, 2014: The Obama administration issued a revised version of the HHS mandate. Under the guise of “filling out forms”, the new rules require people of faith to violate their religious beliefs or face fines of as much as $36,500 per year, per employee.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, explained the new rules like this:

“Let’s use a simple example. The government comes up with a plan to arbitrarily imprison children between 2 and 4 years old, and imposes on businesses the obligation to inform them of such children among the families of their employees.

“Any employer with a conscience is going to say, ‘I want nothing to do with this. If you’re going to imprison these children, you’re going to have to find them yourself. I won’t be sending you any information.’

“We want a full exemption from this mandate, so that we have nothing to do with this scheme. … Our religion requires no less.”

Just a thought from CtH …

Yesterday, one of my Facebook friends reported hearing a young man say there’s no reason to give a crap if a cop gets shot. “That’s what they signed up for.”  I’m guessing he votes Democrat, so it just crossed my mind today that the same could be said of women who accept jobs with Christian non-profits and family-owned companies.  There’s no reason to give a crap if they have to pay for their immoral practices out of their own pockets.  “That’s what they signed up for.”

Extremists

I think it’s a mistake to judge a religion based on the real life examples provided by the lapsed, the fallen, or the cafeteria adherents. Instead, I think we should look at people who sacrificed everything in order to conform themselves as closely as possible to their chosen faiths.

Iraq Update from Canon Andrew

August 17, 2014: Dear Friends,

The traumas of the IS invasion continue to devastate Iraq. The terrific rampage and the slaughtering is continuing. The stories remain too awful to tell, the pictures simply too terrible to show.

All we can do is take assurance in the fact that G-d is our refuge. It is difficult saying that when all, including one’s home, has been taken from you, when some of your loved ones have been killed and when there are ten families sharing a four roomed house and everything you ever had has been taken from you. The one thing that the Christians are saying is that despite everything, Yeshua still loves them.

I have been back in England for part of the week. … On Monday I return to Israel for a short while before returning to Baghdad. Dr Sarah is back in the North of Iraq working on the relief work. Please pray that the Lord will protect us and give us the strength to keep going.

Blessings, Andrew

Today, Catholics celebrate the Assumption of Mary into Heaven

Assumption of Mary

In layman’s terms, Mary got her glorified body early.

There has never been any defined doctrine about whether or not Mary died first. I had a pastor who believed she would have wanted to die, because her Son had done so. But one of the seers at Medjugorje asked her about it and she said she did not die.

I like the idea that she did not die, because when Jesus returns on the clouds, the dead in Christ will rise first and receive their glorified bodies, just as Jesus patterned for us with his glorious Resurrection.

After the Resurrection of the Dead, the elect who are alive will receive their glorified bodies directly, without dying first. I like the idea that Mary did not die, but rather that her Assumption was our pattern for the Rapture.

It seems like somebody must have seen the event, so it puzzled me how nobody seems to have known if she’d died or not. Then I remembered that folks in the Holy Land often slept on the roof in summer, because it was cooler up there. If the household was sleeping on the roof when Mary was taken up, this would’ve provided one or more witness to her leave-taking without anyone having any way of knowing if she’d died in her sleep first or not.

It’s true that the New Testament does not explicitly say it happened, but it offers us much evidence of Mary’s close union with Jesus’ entire life and ministry. Also, I think it stands to reason that God would not have wanted decay to touch the body that had nurtured the Son of God. Plus, the earliest ancient record of a belief in Mary’s Assumption dates to the second century, which makes it not too long after John wrote the Book of Revelation. Another powerful bit of evidence is that Medieval Catholics were relic crazy, but there is no tomb of Mary or bits of Mary’s bones or anything of that sort.

In an address he gave in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI said that meditating on the “the luminous sign of Our Lady taken up into Heaven” helps us understand that Earth is not our homeland and strengthens us when we’re going through hard times.

War is not the worst evil

St Maximilan Kolbe

Today is the Feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar.  During the Second World War, Kolbe sheltered many Polish Jews in his friary. In 1941, he was arrested and later transferred to the Auschwitz death camp as prisoner #16670. In July of that year, he volunteered to take the place of a husband and father who had been selected by the Nazis to die.

During his confinement in an underground bunker, Fr. Kolbe kept up the spirits of his fellow prisoners and remained a pillar of strength and calm. After all the other prisoners had died of starvation, the Nazis executed Fr. Kolbe on August 14, 1941. The following day, which is the Solemnity of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven, his mortal remains were cremated in the infamous Auschwitz ovens.

The Holocaust was a rare moment of moral clarity in all of human history. The Global War On Terror should be another. When innocent women and children are being starved on a mountaintop or hacked to pieces, when jihadists cheer as their children play with severed heads as trophies, when we see the black flag of death raised above the rubble and the cross of our eternal salvation torn down, we must act.

Muslim extremists seek permanent war against all those who do not believe as they do. Unless and until they are defeated, those who desire freedom and peace will never be safe.

Canon Andrew White: On-the-ground reports from Iraq

2014_08 01 Baghdad - 8 shot in face for refusing to convert

Excerpts from the Facebook of Canon Andrew White, Baghdad, Iraq.

August 3, 2014: Many people have asked they can give to us in our crisis. USA http://www.frrmeamerica.org. UK and elsewhere http://www.frrme.org.

August 5, 2014: I have spent much of the day with one Iraq’s most senior Sunni Imam, Sheik Khalid Al Mullah. He has openly and clearly spoken out against the evil events, massacres and slaughters committed by ISIS. He not only stated they were totally demonic, he said they were totally against everything Islam stands for. He stated that Christianity was the very root of Iraqi society, therefore Christians are at the heart of Iraqi society. We went to see the US Ambassador together and the Sheik was able to share these points with him.

August 6, 2014: I am just at Baghdad International Airport heading up north to see the people ousted from Mosul. It has been so good being with our Archdeacon a person who though American had spent a life time serving in the Middle East. He had no doubt that this was where I was called to be and this is where I must stay and serve and to that I say Hallelujah.

August 7, 2014: Over a hundred people were killed in Baghdad last night. There is one other person here doing what we are doing with his wife. Dr Plumb and his wife Peggy are both in their late 70’s, they are Mormons have been here several months using all their own money. He is our closest friend here. All the time people say to me how can you work with a Mormorn. Well he is the only other person here doing the work of Jesus caring for the poor and the dying and we love each other.

August 8, 2014: We are living in worst crisis I have ever known. Working day and night to meet the needs of those who have nothing. We are providing a huge amount and as you will see on this video we are all very tired, but our lord is sustaining us.

August 9, 2014: The extent of the persecution here in Iraq cannot be described. The massacres, the crucifixions, the rapes. The most horrendous massacre of the innocents since the Holocaust. Yet amongst all of this we give thanks because ours is the Kingdom of Heaven.
