Trump’s disapproval numbers are running at around 56%, while his approval numbers are around 39%. But, Legal Insurrection, Politico, and Victor David Hanson all seem to agree that Democrats would be naive to assume this means they’re going to win big in the midterms.
For one thing, his numbers haven’t changed since he was inaugurated. That’s unusual. Most presidents get a honeymoon period when folks are giving the new guy the benefit of the doubt.
For another, privately done research shows the so-called “resistance” may be backfiring. Hanson writes:
“There is a populist and growing resistance to the Orwellian idea that free speech is hate speech, that equality of opportunity is defined only by equality of result, and that identity politics determines the degree of government-mandated penance and reparations. … The quiet resistance is far larger than the loud Resistance and far more revolutionary. Its nature is still not fully understood by the elite Left.”

We all know just how loudly and angrily the left has been reacting to President Trump in general. But in case there’s any doubt about how the partisan right is responding to the Trump team’s moves lately, there shouldn’t be. They’re infuriated. But there’s also seems to be an understanding that there’s little they can do about it.

Via Twitter, Trump praised the almost 800,000 illegal alien recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, saying they are “good, educated and accomplished young people,” but failing to mention some of the key points on the issue that he often brought to light during the 2016 presidential election.
On Wednesday’s CNN Tonight, host Don Lemon took the extraordinary step of conceding that Hillary Clinton made mistakes during the election that she won’t acknowledge, but it didn’t sit well with CNN political analyst and American Urban Radio Networks White House correspondent April Ryan as she vehemently defended Clinton.
As Breitbart News reported, Trump’s congressional relations aide Marc Short told reporters that he is not asking Democrats to exchange amnesty for the hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens covered by the Obama-created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for the legal immigration-cutting RAISE Act, E-Verify, or even border wall funding.
Many of the ideas party leaders have latched onto in an attempt to appeal to their lost voters — free college tuition, raising the minimum wage to $15, even Medicare for all — test poorly among voters outside the base. The people in these polls and focus groups tend to see those proposals as empty promises, at best.
The president’s response to the Charlottesville violence, the rolling back of the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals, Russian collusion hysteria, the slow pace of enacting his agenda—all of these things have Democrats grinning, expect that they shouldn’t. The party’s own operatives and data crunchers have run through the numbers based on focus groups, and Democrats are still heading for the electoral ditch.

He assured the show’s liberal panelists: “I’m almost sure he would do this and I’m almost sure Democrats in the Senate would have his back in doing this.”
According to a study released this week by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, 73.6 percent of America’s top universities don’t guarantee students a presumption of innocence, fewer than half require that fact-finders be impartial, and a full 58.5 percent of institutions don’t “provide students with a meaningful opportunity to cross-examine witnesses” in cases of sexual misconduct. And this is a partial list of university legal failures. All told, 45 of the 53 rated colleges received a “D” or “F” for their commitment to due process.
CNN’s Tom Kludt reported “the booking is a coup” – CBS Sunday Morning host Jane Pauley will get the first TV interview with Hillary Clinton since her defeat at Trump’s hands in 2016, airing Sunday. Then Kludt noted CBS owns Hillary’s publisher Simon & Schuster, so there’s really no “coup” there at all.
The shows, entitled Have Mercy and Illegal (not exactly subtle) focus on illegal aliens who are struggling to achieve their full potential in the United States.
IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER YOU’RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION
The president’s total capitulation occurred in a Wednesday meeting with congressional leaders from both parties. Earlier, Minority Leaders Pelosi and Schumer proposed a plan to tie Hurricane Harvey relief to a short-term debt ceiling increase until mid-December. President Trump agreed to support the Democratic plan. To make matters even worse, the president said Wednesday that his administration will always “automatically” agree on increasing the debt ceiling.
Several Republicans briefed on the meeting said that Trump, who has been absent a major legislative achievement for his first seven months in office, was hungry for a deal.
“We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred — very important — always we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it,” Trump told reporters Wednesday aboard Air Force One.
The deal is a warning to Republicans — primarily to the party establishment, which has fought Trump at every turn, but also to conservative Republicans, who have long worried about Trump shifting leftwards.
Trump did not provide numbers on what the policy would cost overall, or whether it would apply to all taxpayers or just those who are below a certain income bracket. The initiative is one previously alluded to in an April White House document that outlined the administration’s vision for tax reform. Part of the appeal of the tax credit is that it benefits regular working families, according to meeting attendees who spoke to Politico.
