Green Jobs at Golden Arches

posted by bob

Unemployment rose to 9.1% last month, and employers added only 54,000 new jobs, the smallest increase in eight months. To add insult to injury, half of the new jobs were created by one employer — an employer of whom our obesity-obsessed First Lady vehemently disapproves. The inimitable Bard of Murdock comments:

At fifty-seven tries
I got a real surprise:
A job that oft applies
More cellulite to thighs.

Most mornings when I rise,
With sleep still in my eyes,
I head to work that ties
My life to apple pies.

“Perhaps you would like fries?”
My clients I advise,
“Or maybe Supersize,
And get a Nobel Prize!”

Barack might improvise,
But doesn’t realize,
The jobs his plan supplies,
Michelle would criticize.

While researching this one, I found some other goodies to graphic, like the 10-year-old who got a week’s detention for having one piece of hard candy. They’re not current, so I’ll just direct you to the album:

Here’s what’s blooming today…

Because of the long winter, everything is behind schedule in Wisconsin. And because of the terrible economy, I haven’t had any money to spend on flowers. So what we have in the garden is whatever survived from last year. Fortunately, the forget-me-nots I planted a few years ago not only come back every spring, they multiply and become more vibrant and more beautiful every year.

A Distinction Without a Difference

Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics, on “pro-choice” vs. “pro-abortion”:

I recently heard a guest on a political talk-show trying to defend taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood by saying that we should worry less about abortion and concentrate on helping people who are “already here.”

For those of us in the pro-life movement, it’s an argument we’ve heard regurgitated a million times before. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s complete nonsense. The biological reality is that the unborn are already here. If that’s not the case, I guess the unborn child that appears on a sonogram screen is just a hallucination. Or maybe the womb is some sort of alternative reality/parallel universe that we can look inside of and see these mysterious humanoids moving around who aren’t actually there.

You know, when you hear the loopy arguments the abortion lobby routinely trots out, you really have to wonder how many psychotropic drugs these people are taking.

Later in this talk-show, this same guy became outraged when a caller referred to him as “pro-abortion.” He instantly shot back that he was not pro-abortion but pro-choice and that the two are not the same.

Once again, this is an argument we hear daily. The interesting thing is, when people advocate other causes, you don’t hear them desperately trying to distance themselves from the activity under discussion. People who support capital punishment don’t bristle at being called pro-death penalty. People who work for the protection of animals don’t become infuriated if you refer to them as pro-animal. Those who support the Second Amendment don’t attack you for calling them pro-gun, and the list goes on and on. The only exception to this is people who support abortion. On one hand they will viciously defend its legality while, on the other hand, doing everything humanly possible to deny any association with it.

The message in this is clear. Simply put, even these people realize that abortion is indefensible.

But beyond that, here’s the issue I want to raise. Today, about 3500 American babies are going to have their legs torn off, their arms ripped out of the sockets, their chests crushed and their skulls split open. And when the day is over, most of their corpses will either be ground up in garbage disposals and flushed down the sewer system or tossed into dumpsters to be eaten by rats. Then tomorrow, another 3500 victims will be teed up, and the day after that another 3500, and the day after that another 3500, and so on.

What I want to know is this: for those defenseless babies, what is the difference between pro-abortion and pro-choice?

Bob: I hope you don’t mind me adding the graphic. It seemed so appropriate.

With apologies to Pistol Pete…

I know we agreed to keep PoliNation a royal-wedding-free zone, but this is just too funny not to share. (I lifted it from FranklyTheNut’s Facebook page.)

Just a coincidence?

Happy Mother’s Day

Why Birth Order Matters

PREGNANCY

1st baby: You begin wearing maternity clothes as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test.

2nd baby: You wear your regular clothes for as long as you can squeeze into them.

3rd baby: Your maternity clothes ARE your regular clothes.

PREPARING FOR THE BIRTH

1st baby: You practice your breathing exercises religiously.

2nd baby: You don’t bother, because you found out last time that the breathing exercises didn’t help.

3rd baby: You ask for an epidural in your eighth month.

BABY’S WARDROBE

1st baby: You pre-wash all your baby clothes, color-coordinate them, and fold and store them neatly.

2nd baby: You check to make sure that the clothes are clean and discard only the ones with the worst stains.

3rd baby: A few boxes of disposable diapers and half a dozen hand-me-down t-shirts will do the trick.

AT HOME

1st baby: You spend a good bit of every day just gazing at the baby in rapt wonder.

2nd baby: You spend a good bit of every day checking to see that your firstborn isn’t poking, hitting, strangling, or suffocating the baby.

3rd baby: You spend a little bit of every day hiding from the children.

HANDLING A FUSSY BABY

1st baby: You pick the baby up the second he whimpers.

2nd baby: You pick the baby up when his wails threaten to wake his older sibling.

3rd baby: You teach your three-year-old how to wind up the mechanical swing.

PACIFIER

1st baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you don’t give it back until you’ve sterilized it under boiling water.

2nd baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you don’t give it back until you’ve run it under the faucet.

3rd baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you pick it up, wipe it on your shirt sleeve, and pop it back in.

DIAPERS

1st baby: You change your baby’s diaper every hour whether he needs it or not.

2nd baby: You change your baby’s diaper every three or four hours, maybe.

3rd baby: You change your baby’s diaper when you see it sagging to down to his knees.

ACTIVITIES

1st baby: You take your baby to Baby Gymnastics, Baby Swimming Classes, and Baby Story Hour.

2nd baby: You take your baby to Baby Gymnastics.

3rd baby: You take your baby to the grocery store, the drug store, and the dry cleaner.

BABYSITTERS

1st baby: The first time you leave your baby with a sitter, you call home every half hour to make sure everything is all right.

2nd baby: When you have a sitter, you leave a number where you can be reached in an emergency.

3rd baby: You tell the sitter to call only if she sees blood.

FOREIGN OBJECTS

1st child: When your child swallows a coin, you rush him to the emergency room and demand x-rays.

2nd child: When your child swallows a coin, you wait and watch for the coin to pass.

3rd child: When your child swallows a coin, you say, “That’s coming out of your allowance.”

Equality: Part 3

Whenever I hear politicians or social theorists decry income inequality, I always want to ask them how they think “income equality” could be achieved. As far as I can see, the only way to accomplish such a thing would be for the government to confiscate 100% of everything that everyone earns, and then write a check for an identical amount to every citizen. Not even the most left-wing politicians would be reckless enough to advocate that publicly, so they cook up alternate schemes to accomplish the same thing without resorting to such drastic measures as cold-turkey collectivization.

Progressive taxation is their favorite ploy, mostly because it’s so popular with people in lower tax brackets, and even more popular among people who don’t pay taxes at all. (Incidentally, progressive taxation is also completely unconstitutional, since it violates the guarantee of equal protection of the law, but that’s a subject for another column.) The money thus taken from higher earners can then be distributed to lower earners and non-earners through a mind-boggling array of income transfer programs. Although these schemes have proven depressingly effective at vote buying, they have utterly failed at the goal of eradicating “income inequality.” Continue reading

Equality: Part 2

Last time, I argued that equality under the law is the only equality that is worth having. Without it, the rights of a privileged few are safe — at least as long as they’re able to hang onto their privileged status — but everyone else’s rights can be trampled underfoot any time the folks in power find it to their advantage to do so. That’s one reason why countries that lack equal protection of the law are such hellholes, and why their primary export tends to be their own people, who flee them in droves and head for places like the United States, which they see as the land of opportunity.

Any other type of equality, however, is overrated at best, and at worst it’s downright dangerous. The reason is that when we make a fetish of equality, and consider it an unalloyed good, then we come to view inequality as an unalloyed evil. “Inequality” becomes synonymous in our minds with “injustice.”

But let’s be honest: “Inequality” is just another word for “difference.” Notice how when you call it a “difference,” its nefarious connotations vanish into thin air? Continue reading
