The Democrats and Class Warfare

Click on graphics to embiggen

The Democrats have been claiming that rich people get a lower tax rate.

This is a Big Fat Lie.

All Americans are subject to the exact same tax code.

The “lower than his secretary’s” tax rate that Buffett pays is on his long-term capital gains income. His famous secretary’s “higher tax rate” is on her regular income.

If Buffett earned any regular income, he’d pay the rate that’s on the same chart his secretary’s salary is taxed on. And if his six-figure, two-luxury-home-owning secretary sold one of those houses at a profit, she’d pay capital gains tax at the same rate that Buffett pays.

There are many good reasons for capital gains to be taxed at a lower rate. For example, it encourages people to invest in business and property.

The Democrats claim that their proposed “Buffett Rule” increase on the capital gains tax rate would increase revenues to the government and help with the national debt. But it is just as likely to further depress the economy, leading to even fewer jobs and less tax revenue.

Since big economic issues are much too hard for us dumb homemakers to understand, here’s another, simpler reason the Buffett Rule is a crappy idea.

Let’s imagine that your elderly parents have retired and are slowing down. They need to move to a smaller, less expensive home, so they decide it’s time to sell the house you grew up in.

They spent 30+ years caring for and paying off the mortgage on that house. It’s the biggest asset they have. Besides allowing them to move to a smaller place, its sale will help finance their final years on earth.

Over the years they were earning and putting money into the house, their income was taxed at the regular income tax rate. When they sell, the government will graciously allow them to have that amount of money tax-free. Generous of them, isn’t it? Seeing as it was their money all along, just tied up in the house.

But what about any money they make on the sale price that exceeds the amount they paid for and put into fixing the house? THAT money the government counts as long-term capital gains income. And Uncle Sam wants his pound of flesh for it.

This is the allegedly unfair lower tax rate that the Buffet Rule proposes to increase so it will match the higher tax rate on regular income. Democrats are saying this is more “fair.” But what is fair about politicians taking a ginormous bite out of an elderly couple’s retirement money?

The Left talks about people who have assets as if they are all dirty scoundrels who deserve to be punished. But what’s evil about owning and caring for a home? SOMEbody has to own it. Would it have been better if your folks rented all those years, then when they retired, they’d have NO assets to see them through their golden years? Sheesh.

And … by the way, Occupiers … a whole bunch of these exact same self-righteous Democrats are themselves millionaires.

One of them, Barack Obama, just tucked a whole bunch of his moolah into trust funds for his kids where the IRS can’t get at it.

“How unpatriotic!” the Left would say, if it were Mitt Romney or some other Republican. But, seeing as it’s a Democrat, “He’s just doing what’s best for his family.”

Obama’s been running around ranting about how “unfair” it is that long-term capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than regular income when he himself has no capital gains income. Meanwhile, he is NOT running around ranting about how “unfair” it is that millionaires like him are allowed to shelter great wads of their (allegedly ill-gotten) gains in trust funds for their kids!

What flaming hypocrites these people are! Personally, I have no problem with trust funds or lower capital gains tax rates. What bothers me is hypocrisy. And these people are the worst!

The Left’s “War on the Rich” is just another inning in the same ol’ same ol’ political game they have always played, pitting one group of Americans against another group of Americans in order to get votes and advance their own careers, their own power and their own Big Fat Bank Accounts.

If this doesn’t scare you, something is very, very wrong.

Caveat: I have seen no evidence whatsoever that Barack Obama is “brilliant” and I highly doubt he’s “devised” much of anything, never mind the entire scheme to bring this great nation to its knees. Is he helping to implement the plans that others have devised? Absolutely.

An Obama classmate speaks out by Wayne Allyn Root – June 6, 2010

Rahm Emanuel cynically said, “You never want a crisis to go to waste.” It is now becoming clear that the crisis he was referring to is Barack Obama’s presidency.

Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent. To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he’s doing. He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure, economic crisis and social chaos — thereby destroying capitalism and our country from within.

Barack Obama is my college classmate (Columbia University, class of ’83). As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Obama is following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University. They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they’re alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival … and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

— Universal health care. The health care bill had very little to do with health care. It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn’t care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

— Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama’s biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama “spread the wealth around.”

— Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who’s asking for a 51st state? Who’s asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Obama’s plan all along. His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.

— Legalize 12 million illegal immigrants. Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America. But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security.

— Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions — including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions). A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues). All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America. The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.

— Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition.

With the acts outlined above, Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system.

Add it up and you’ve got the perfect Marxist scheme — all devised by my Columbia University college classmate Barack Obama.

Obama’s rate of debt increase is THREE TIMES Bush’s

July 3, 2008: The day before Independence Day, Candidate Obama said that it was irresponsible and unpatriotic of Bush to allow the national debt to rise by $4 Trillion over his 8 years in office. What is three times worse than irresponsible and unpatriotic? Criminal and treasonous?

In 2008, Obama said that Bush added $4 Trillion to the national debt “all by his lonesome.” Not that he wants to take sole credit for the $6 Trillion that’s piled on since he moved into the Oval Office. We wouldn’t want to confuse the issues by noting that it’s Congress that writes the budget or that it was the Democrat-controlled Congress that took over in 2007 that did most of the debting Obama attributed to Bush.

At least, under Bush, Congress actually produced a budget. The Democrats who have been in charge of the Senate since Obama took office don’t much bother themselves about doing what is undoubtedly their single most important job and something they are paid handsomely to perform … but don’t, because they’re way too busy blaming the Republican minority for keeping Obama from creating Ameritopia. This is also what Obama does whenever the debt comes up. Blame Bush. Blame Republicans.

It’s astonishing how much raw power one acquires simply by checking R on a voter registration card, isn’t it?

Republican Bush managed to add $4 Trillion to the national debt “all by his lonesome” and the Republican minority under Obama has managed to block just about everything poor old Obama and his good-hearted Democrat majority have tried to do over the past three years!

I really must look in the back of my closet. Seems to me, there should be a red, white and blue Spandex body suit back there somewhere. I wonder if it has a cape.

A smattering of economic common sense

Today’s Must See Video
The Most Persistent Economic Fallacy of All Time!

This is essentially a restatement of the “parable of the broken window” by French theorist Frédéric Bastiat.

Bastiat’s original parable of the broken window from Ce qu’on voit et ce qu’on ne voit pas (1850):

Have you ever witnessed the anger of the good shopkeeper, James Goodfellow, when his careless son happened to break a pane of glass? If you have been present at such a scene, you will most assuredly bear witness to the fact that every one of the spectators, were there even thirty of them, by common consent apparently, offered the unfortunate owner this invariable consolation—”It is an ill wind that blows nobody good. Everybody must live, and what would become of the glaziers if panes of glass were never broken?”

Now, this form of condolence contains an entire theory, which it will be well to show up in this simple case, seeing that it is precisely the same as that which, unhappily, regulates the greater part of our economical institutions.

Suppose it cost six francs to repair the damage, and you say that the accident brings six francs to the glazier’s trade—that it encourages that trade to the amount of six francs—I grant it; I have not a word to say against it; you reason justly. The glazier comes, performs his task, receives his six francs, rubs his hands, and, in his heart, blesses the careless child. All this is that which is seen.

But if, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion, as is too often the case, that it is a good thing to break windows, that it causes money to circulate, and that the encouragement of industry in general will be the result of it, you will oblige me to call out, “Stop there! Your theory is confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not seen.”

It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six francs in some way, which this accident has prevented.

This came to me on a very opportune day. My dd just emailed her dismay that she fried their laptop. They were planning to upgrade soon anyway, so you might think it’s not that big a deal for them economically.

In fact, reasoning along the line of the broken window, the $100 they will have to cough up to retrieve the data on the hard drive will be good for some computer tech guy.

But continuing on to the things not seen … how about this used laptop that will now NOT be going on the market where some person who has an even older, crappier computer could afford to upgrade?

This is what happened with Obama’s Cash for Clunkers program. Very few buyers used that program who were not already planning to buy a new car anyway. They took advantage of the rebate, caused a short spike in car sales, which was immediately followed by a slump during the following months when those now sated new car owners were NOT shopping. It also took all those clunkers out of the used car market, which happens to be an important resource for those who need less expensive than brand new transportation.

You can read Bastiat’s entire pamphlet here: http://bastiat.org/en/twisatwins.html. It is well worth your time.

He’s beatable, but we have our work cut out for us.

Compare the numbers on the two bar graphs with each other and with this little factoid:
    Feb. 9, 2012 Rasmussen Poll
40% of Likely U.S. Voters said Obama’s performance
in the economic area is GOOD or EXCELLENT.

Click on graphics to embiggen.

THE GOOD NEWS is that his core supporters are a minority whose beliefs and policies offend all that most of us hold dear.

THE BAD NEWS is that, while 65% say the country is going in the wrong direction, 15% turn around and give Obama a positive approval rating and 5% are so out-to-lunch they actually give him good to excellent ratings on the economy!

Anyone who knows the FACTS knows that Obama’s policies are the same as the Democrats’ standard agenda of raising taxes and increasing spending.

Anyone who knows the FACTS knows that these policies have dominated the federal agenda since Democrats took over Congress in 2006 and brought on and sustained the worst economy this country has endured since the Great Depression.

THE FACT IS that the Democrat Media Complex is NOT telling people the FACTS.

It’s no surprise this is our biggest challenges this year. I found a very recent poll of voter trust in t.v. news sources (January 2012) by Public Policy Polling.  Granted, PPP is a Democratic Party-affiliated polling firm … which is definitely reflected in the snarky comments readers posted under the poll report. Surprisingly, though, I didn’t find any bias in the PPP survey sample. And I really ground those numbers LOOKING for one!

At 700, the sample is short of the ideal 1,000 or more. But the demographics for gender and race are close to the general population. I think the age groups are as well, though I did find a rather serious error in the way the data is reported.

I.e., the age groupings in the question do not match the age groupings in the data. However, I compared the percents with the 2010 census and found the question groupings match well with the percents reported. My conclusion is that someone just screwed up the row labels.

In any event, the Big One … the one thing that biased political polls skew the worst … is the breakdown by party affiliation. And this one the PPP poll got bang on.  GALLUP does a running poll on this subject (URL below), so it’s easy enough to compare how well any survey’s sample matches the population for the date it was taken.

Jan 2012     PPP Sample    GALLUP Party Affiliation Poll
Democrat            41%              30%         47%    with leaners
Republican         35%              27%         44%    with leaners
Independent      24%              42%           9%

PPP over-polled Democrats by 11% and Republicans by 8%, apparently giving a 3% advantage to Democrats. However, 3% is exactly how much Democrats polled over Republicans when leaners were included. So I’m going with accepting the poll results as fairly accurate of American voter opinion about broadcast news media for January 2012.

I spent hours massaging the numbers. I even made some graphics that turned out to say nothing much. So I deleted them again. It turns out there wasn’t anything surprising in the data. Republicans trust Fox. Democrats don’t. What else is new?

One thing did really stick out for me in the survey and that is that they included Comedy Central in the list of “t.v. news sources.” Huh?

I looked it up. The closest “news show” I can find on Comedy Central is “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” … “Describing itself as a fake news program, The Daily Show draws its comedy and satire from recent news stories, political figures, media organizations, and often, aspects of the show itself.”

IOW, PPP included a show that chooses what news it will cover based on where Jon and his writers find the best jokes. That is kinda creeptastic all by itself. But just to make it even more “What the hell do these people use for brains?” … the survey found 28% of all respondents saying they trust Comedy Central as a news source.

The “trust” breakdown was 36% Democrat, 37% Independent, and (sadly) 12% Republican. I’m guessing those last ones are like the fellow Dearest talked to when he was collecting Republican ballot signatures. This older gentleman said he was a lifelong Republican, that he really missed Clinton and thought that Carter was the greatest president in American history. Oy.

Chrissy’s Site Bites: http://news.webshots.com/photo/2824491250056011884JWNTSJ

I was kinda creeped out that Comedy Central came in second (not first) on the most distrusted list, but then I got thinking about it and realized the #1 most distrusted (Fox) needs to be set apart from the rest. As the only news source that gives Conservatives a fair shake, it’s the obvious target for Libtards to pick as most distrusted. Our side, however, has to choose from among seven different, left-biased sources.

I got thinking what my #1 least trusted is on that list and realized it would come down to Comedy Central or MSNBC. Since Comedy Central occasionally sticks it to Obama et al. whereas MSNBC has that thrill up the leg thing going for all things Democrat, I decided I’d go with MSNBC.  And … what do you know? The top two most distrusted tv news sources that are not Fox were Comedy Central (16%) and MSNBC (15%).

I think I have sufficiently established that we can safely IGNORE the one-in-three voters who are either hard core Leftists or else too stoned on Leftist kool-aid to listen to anything we’d have to say.  One can hope the “too stoned” will party hearty the night before election day and be too hung over to remember to vote. Or else that they’ll be too dumb to find their polling place … especially those of us who are being redistricted so who the heck knows WHERE we’ll be sent to vote this year.

As for the rest … 50% of us are on board. How we shake down in the electoral college is an important issue, of course, but we only need to win enough votes, not all the votes, or even a ‘whelming majority of votes.

I think the key is to continue telling the TRUTH. We’ve got the facts and the record of history on our side. All they’ve got is a lot of news media sources willing to do free PR for the Democrats.

And honestly … I don’t think it’s working all that well for them any more. One in five liberals said they do trust Fox News, but do not trust MSNBC. One in four Democrats said they do trust Fox News, but do not trust MSNBC.

People really hate being lied to, so once they get wise to how biased the Laughing Stock Media really is, they’re not going to go back. We just need to stay on point, not let them choose the agenda, and never back down when they call us names.

I am Andrew Breitbart!

Home Values and Party Control

Click on graphic to embiggen.

The average American home is worth 21% less now than it did five years ago and the market is glutted with cheap foreclosed houses. This is terrible for people who need to sell their homes, but are carrying mortgages that are bigger than their houses are currently worth.

Mortgage rates are at historically low levels, which combined with low home values should help new home buyers to enter the market.

Unfortunately, since a lot of this housing demand will be soaking up cheap supply created by foreclosure, Zillow expects home values will continue to fall modestly in most markets, even while home sales are rising.
