Obama DOJ takes elderly pro-life sidewalk counselor to court

By Tina Korbe – July 21, 2011

http://hotair.com/archives/2011/07/21/obama-doj-takes-elderly-pro-life-sidewalk-counselor-to-court/

Those who know Dick Retta describe him as a peaceful, prayerful man, who regards his sidewalk counseling outside the Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington as a ministry. Retta even conducts weekend training sessions to encourage other pro-life advocates to stand outside the facility to offer words of hope, encouragement and possibility to the young women who come and go from the abortion center. At these training sessions, one attendee says, he specifically emphasizes that the point of sidewalk counseling is not to block access, but, instead, to remind pregnant women that they do, in fact, have a choice other than abortion — and to offer post-abortion healing, as well, as few abortion centers prepare women for all of the possible emotional consequences of their decision.

But perhaps nothing attests to Retta’s warm and compassionate nature so much as the influence he has been able to have on the women he counsels as he walks side-by-side with them. Some estimate that, over the past 14 years or so, Retta’s words have resulted in more than 1,000 “saves,” what members of the pro-life movement call the change of heart that leads a pregnant mother to choose to have her child.

Retta also patiently endures the antipathy of those who aren’t receptive to his message. Just last week, by one account, a woman entering the clinic pepper-sprayed Retta. Yet, Retta persists in his work because he’s seen what a positive difference it makes.

In a short video[1], Peter Shinn of Pro-Life Unity documented one of Retta’s days, in which six women decided not to abort because of the information and assistance he was able to provide.

“They go in and they’re kind of sullen in what they’re doing, and I’m sure there’s a lot of sorrow there,” Retta says in the video. “But when they change their mind, they’re smiling, they’re happy about it and they’re willing to talk to us.”

Yet, this man, the Department of Justice describes[2] as “among the most vocal and aggressive anti-abortion protesters outside the Clinic.” In fact, the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ has brought a lawsuit[3] against Retta, alleging that he has repeatedly violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Act, obstructing entrance to the clinic on at least one occasion. The complaint objects to Retta “walk[ing] very closely beside patients” and says he yells at them.

Retta was not available for comment when I contacted him by phone, but he reportedly was shocked[4] at the allegations.

When LifeSiteNews.com contacted Retta for comment today, the shocked veteran pro-life activist said that he was unaware that the lawsuit had been filed against him, and that he had not been informed by the Department of Justice. He is seeking legal counsel before making a public statement. …

The Department of Justice is demanding that Retta be fined $10,000, that a permanent 20 foot bubble zone be placed around the clinic barring pro-lifers, and that Retta pay an additional fine of $15,000 in equal parts to the three ‘victims’ of his actions, which the DOJ argues were contrary to the Freedom of Access to Clinic Act (FACE).

A Department of Justice that can’t find time to defend the Defense of Marriage Act somehow has time to bring a lawsuit against a 70+ year-old man who simply seeks to pass out flyers and speak a few kind words to women in need of them? It’s hard to think this has nothing to do with the hundreds of thousands of dollars Retta has cost Planned Parenthood.

Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, describes the DOJ’s justification for the suit this way:

“Individuals who seek to obtain or provide reproductive health services have the right to do so without encountering hazardous physical obstructions. We will continue to aggressively enforce FACE against those who seek to violate the rights of their fellow Americans to safely provide or obtain such services.”

Retta is a “hazardous” physical obstruction? The best the complaint could offer is that, once, he accidentally stepped on a patient’s shoe and broke a shoe strap.

Perez just happens to be the same Perez who testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about the DOJ’s decision to completely drop charges against the New Black Panthers who engaged in voter intimidation a couple years ago. Perhaps not prosecuting important cases like that one is what frees the DOJ up to pursue cases like this one.

How beautiful would it be if the many women Retta has helped would step forward to help him now?

This is part of my Chrissy’s Site Bites album where I catalog physical violence by Leftists. I named it “Call me when a liberal goes on a shooting spree” after seeing this (with a YAWN) in a comment on a blog complaining about how the media unfairly leaps to conclusions about the allegedly rightwing political motivations for various violent crimes. E.g., the Tucson shooting where Giffords was wounded by … as it turned out … a former Giffords campaign volunteer.

It is clear from the site that “in-clinic” means “here at this facility.”

It is also clear from the bottom line that Planned Parenthood has no interest in providing support or emergency medical care if the pills cause any of the known (or unknown) nasty side effects, such as excruciating pain, major blood loss and death.

I have been amusing myself thinking of other professions trying this coercive sales tactic like … “Before I begin trying to clear your clogged drain, you must agree that if I fail, you will pay me to replace all your pipes.”

I have been less amused thinking about gullible girls forced to sign this agreement who might otherwise take a chemical abortion failure as a sign from God that He didn’t want them to kill this child, but who fear what PP might do to them if they don’t go back for that in-clinic abortion.

There’s an interesting discussion of when and where “86” became common slang for “get rid of” or “kill.” Lots of theories, but nobody actually knows for sure.

  • In 2010, 1.2 million abortions were performed in the United States.

  • 1,200,000 is approximately the population of Dallas, Texas.

  • 97% or 1,164,000 of these unborn Americans were killed for reasons other than rape, incest or life of the mother.

Alive and Human

By Chrissy the Hyphenated

I split off some of my “Human Rights for All Humans” album into two new and smaller albums.

“Alive and Human from Conception”

http://news.webshots.com/album/580255504pgzlCk

focuses on the wonders of pre-natal development while

“Abortion – Is this what you mean by CHOICE?”
http://news.webshots.com/album/580255208TOgKiL

focuses on the horrors abortion visits on the unborn. This one has a “Warning: Graphic Images” label on the front so folks who find the pics disturbing will know to avoid it.

A Distinction Without a Difference

Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics, on “pro-choice” vs. “pro-abortion”:

I recently heard a guest on a political talk-show trying to defend taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood by saying that we should worry less about abortion and concentrate on helping people who are “already here.”

For those of us in the pro-life movement, it’s an argument we’ve heard regurgitated a million times before. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s complete nonsense. The biological reality is that the unborn are already here. If that’s not the case, I guess the unborn child that appears on a sonogram screen is just a hallucination. Or maybe the womb is some sort of alternative reality/parallel universe that we can look inside of and see these mysterious humanoids moving around who aren’t actually there.

You know, when you hear the loopy arguments the abortion lobby routinely trots out, you really have to wonder how many psychotropic drugs these people are taking.

Later in this talk-show, this same guy became outraged when a caller referred to him as “pro-abortion.” He instantly shot back that he was not pro-abortion but pro-choice and that the two are not the same.

Once again, this is an argument we hear daily. The interesting thing is, when people advocate other causes, you don’t hear them desperately trying to distance themselves from the activity under discussion. People who support capital punishment don’t bristle at being called pro-death penalty. People who work for the protection of animals don’t become infuriated if you refer to them as pro-animal. Those who support the Second Amendment don’t attack you for calling them pro-gun, and the list goes on and on. The only exception to this is people who support abortion. On one hand they will viciously defend its legality while, on the other hand, doing everything humanly possible to deny any association with it.

The message in this is clear. Simply put, even these people realize that abortion is indefensible.

But beyond that, here’s the issue I want to raise. Today, about 3500 American babies are going to have their legs torn off, their arms ripped out of the sockets, their chests crushed and their skulls split open. And when the day is over, most of their corpses will either be ground up in garbage disposals and flushed down the sewer system or tossed into dumpsters to be eaten by rats. Then tomorrow, another 3500 victims will be teed up, and the day after that another 3500, and the day after that another 3500, and so on.

What I want to know is this: for those defenseless babies, what is the difference between pro-abortion and pro-choice?

Bob: I hope you don’t mind me adding the graphic. It seemed so appropriate.

I urge everyone to get hold of a copy of this and watch it.

Maafa is Swahili for disaster. It is pronounced mah AHH fah. It refers to the 500 years of suffering of Africans and the African diaspora, through slavery, imperialism, colonialism, invasion, oppression, dehumanization and exploitation.

Maafa 21 tells the story of how Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party planned the continued slavery and genocide of blacks via abortion and welfare. It’s a devastating tale that is waking up the black community and converting Mushy Middle, guilt-ridden liberal whites.

I heard more than a year ago that it had been pirated and was being sold on the streets in Harlem for $5 a copy. When the producer learned that, he said, “Good.” He’d paid his production expenses and just wants the story OUT THERE.

If you are in a position to organize a screening for a black community or a liberal white community, please! It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to defeat the Left!
