Democrats campaigned on two things: the Iraq War and Republicans were spending too much money.

Well, Petraeus, the general Bush put in charge, won the war in Iraq and Obama thankfully has not brought our troops home before the fragile Iraqi democracy is ready to stand against its enemies without our help. So let’s all give a round of applause to President Bush’s leadership that gained us a critical democratic ally in the middle of the volatile Middle East.

As for spending, yeah, the dirtbags in charge of both parties have been passing out the pork for years and the GOP did little to stop the red ink. But look what happened when Democrats took over Congress after railing about Republican spending. The rate of over-spending immediately INCREASED. And once they got hold of the White House, all bets were off.

Democrat spending managed to increase our nation debt to GDP by 45% in just FOUR YEARS!

The reason S&P reduced our national credit rating (for the first time since Pearl Harbor) is because our national debt is now nearly 100% of our GDP. If you owed as much as you earn in a year, you couldn’t get a loan either.

This study assesses the Reagan supply-side policies by comparing the nation’s economic performance in the Reagan years (1981-89) with its performance in the immediately preceding Ford-Carter years(1974-81) and in the Bush-Clinton years that followed (1989-95).

On 8 of the 10 key economic variables examined, the American economy performed better during the Reagan years than during the pre- and post-Reagan years.

This study also exposes 12 fables of Reaganomics, such as that the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, the Reagan tax cuts caused the deficit to explode, and Bill Clinton’s economic record has been better than Reagan’s.

A little nature lesson for ya,bubala;these people were camping amid wild animals.Wild animals have three tasks in life–eat,defecate,procreate.Been doing it a long time.The bear was underweight because midsummer is not peak feeding season.When the salmon run starts next month,bears gorge themselves to store fat for the winter.If humans go into a wild animal’s territory,they assume considerable risk,especially if they don’t know what they’re doing.Apparently studying nature was not in your journalism class at Harvard.Stick to what you know,like bashing republicans as barefoot,beer-guzzling imbeciles and eeevil corporate bigshots.Leave how the real world works to us,K?

Canaries in the coal mine

I was astonished to learn the federal government was borrowing a MUCH larger portion of its operating expenses in the 1930s than it is today. I was taught that FDR got us out of the Great Depression. Based on that, I’d conclude that Democrats are right, deficit spending to “prime the pump” is a good thing and we should tax, spend and grow government even bigger. Screw S&P. Run that old federal debt right up to 100% of the GDP. Or more!

But wait. Lately, I’ve been reading that FDR’s policies actually extended the Depression by many years and that it was only World War II that finally lifted us out of the prolonged economic slump. So maybe borrowing and spending is not such a great idea, especially looking at what’s happened to Greece and other places that ignored their red ink.

E.g., a city in Rhode Island recently declared bankruptcy. All the government employees got laid off and all their benefits-cushy union contracts have been canceled. Is California next? Is New York?  Should we not listen to the canaries in the coal mine?
