Plagiarism or Flattery?
I just wanted to say a few (of my own) words about how much “sincerest forms of flattery” I post here.
- For the record, I very often do NOT write completely original text for what I post here. I also don’t put everything I crib into quotation marks or create every graphic I post.
- What I DO do is link to my sources and leave credits that are present. (Lots of graphics aren’t signed. I don’t sign mine.)
I know the quotation marks thing is very slipshod scholarship that would get me thrown out of academia, but I’m not writing scholarship so much as I am simplifying and sharing good stuff I find in what I read on the ‘net or at home in actual books.
I think of my posts as being the online version of what I’d share with someone I was chatting with in person or on the phone. Since I find that quotation marks make a piece a lot harder for busy readers to scan, I don’t use them much.
Scan: To skim quickly to catch the main idea and to decide if you want to engage your mind more fully and read more carefully. My graphics, indents, boxes, colors and boldings are all designed to make scanning easier for y’all.

My Apologies
My original intent was to do a post with a lot of different news items. I didn’t realize I had so much Roy Moore stuff bookmarked. I try to be as concise as possible, but concise is something that’s never been in my job description. My hunch is that most people don’t bother to check any of the links (except CtH) and it’s a shame to hide a lot of good stuff in a reply section most people don’t bother with.

Al Gore would have won in 2000 if he were president. Democrats would have taken the high road, outing a president who sexually harassed a clerk, Paula Jones.
Instead, Clinton survived and parents had to explain what oral sex is to children far too young for such conversations, a discomfort many still resent.
Bill also cost Hillary her shot at the presidency. Twice.

True Tolerance
Most of what passes for tolerance today is intellectual cowardice, a fear of intelligent engagement.
Those who brandish the word “intolerant” are unwilling to be challenged by other views, to grapple with contrary opinions, or even to consider them. It’s easier to hurl an insult—“you intolerant bigot”—than to confront the idea and either refute it or be changed by it.
In the modern era, “tolerance” has become intolerance.
But the “modern” definition of tolerance — “All views have equal merit and none should be considered better than another” — presumes to be a view whose merit is better than any other.
It is self-contradictory and therefore pure nonsense.
The fact is that true tolerance can only be practiced toward those we think are wrong. I can’t tolerate someone unless I disagree with him. I don’t need to “tolerate” people who share my views. They’re on my side, so there’s nothing to “put up” with.
The point of true tolerance is to treat those we disagree with decently and with respect.

WaPo Reporter Dave Weigel Deleted Bogus Trump Rally Photo After White House Called Him Out Saturday Morning
The White House called out Washington Post politics reporter Dave Weigel early Saturday morning on his lying tweet mocking President Donald Trump about the size of the crowd at Trump’s rally in Pensacola, Florida Friday night, prompting Weigel to delete the tweet within minutes. Later Saturday, Trump went after Weigel on Twitter demanding an apology which Weigel gave.
Weigel was mocking a tweet by Trump posted at 7:41 a.m. EST about the rally crowd being “packed to the rafters”.
With regard to Weigel’s claim he saw Trump in the photo, there are two issues that a decent reporter would notice: One, the man in question is walking virtually alone with no Secret Service or aides in front and behind him. Second that the man in question is wearing a black tie where as Trump wore a bright red tie at the rally.

Army-Navy Game’s Stunning National Anthem Rendition Puts Every Kneeling NFL Player To Shame
This year marks the 118th time the two teams have met. The teams meet in a neutral city between their respective academies. They often play in NFL stadiums due to the enormous number of active duty and veteran fans who wish to attend.
Before the game, the choirs of the Annapolis and West Point academies joined together to sing the national anthem. It was a solemn moment and was made even more beautiful by the falling snow.
