Employers have been allowed to deduct the premiums they pay on employees, but employees could not opt out of their employers’ plans and then deduct premiums. Nor could the self-employed deduct their premiums! It’s totally unfair AND it keeps health insurance tied to employment, which was a BIG factor in problems Dems cried about needing O’care for — i.e., insurance gaposis between jobs, with attendant waiting during new job start up periods and pre-existing condition exclusions. Health insurance should be totally private market, not tied to employment, where employees are forced into a plan that may not suit their needs and where they lose coverage if they get laid off or decide to change jobs, go back to school, move with a spouse to a new area, etc.]
