When I was 8,I joined the Cub Scouts.At 11 I went into the Boy Scouts as a rite of passage,as many boys did back then.There was a local Scout camp about 30 miles south of where we lived.We went there for a couple summers straight.One summer we wanted to go to Camp Northwoods in Watersmeet,Michigan.I don’t recall what the trip cost back then,but it was considerable.We didn’t want to sell popcorn because every other scout troop was doing it.Your humble correspondent came up with an idea.

We went to Hoople’s Grain and Feed Store(it’s still there)and got stacks of empty feed sacks.Living on a dairy farm,I had an unlimited supply of fresh manure to sell for fertilizer.One kid’s dad was a graphic designer and he made us a big sign for our roadside stand.The sign read:BUY YOUR BS FROM THE BSA. We sold enough for every kid to go to the Northwoods.True story.

Are you kidding me?

Dear Congressman or Senator,

Section 616 of HR 1540 “National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012” is both offensive and absurd.

SEC. 616. MODIFICATION OF QUALIFYING PERIOD FOR PAYMENT OF HOSTILE FIRE AND IMMINENT DANGER SPECIAL PAY AND HAZARDOUS DUTY SPECIAL PAY.

(a) HOSTILE FIRE AND IMMINENT DANGER PAY.—Section 310 of title 37, United States Code, is amended—

(1) in subsection (a), by striking ‘‘for any month or portion of a month’’ and inserting ‘‘for any day or portion of a day’’;

(b) SPECIAL PAY AMOUNT.—(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), the amount of special pay authorized by subsection (a) for qualifying service during a day or portion of a day shall be the amount equal to 1/30th of the maximum monthly amount of special pay payable to a member as specified in paragraph (3).

(2) In the case of a member who is exposed to hostile fire or a hostile mine explosion event in or for a day or portion of a day, the Secretary concerned may, at the election of the Secretary, pay the member special pay under subsection (a) for such service in an amount not to exceed the maximum monthly amount of special pay payable to a member as specified in paragraph (3)

Are you kidding?

Your big plan to cut spending is to decide that living with the imminent danger of being injured or killed isn’t hazardous to our deployed soldiers’ health?

Do you realize that the combat bonus for deployed Soldiers was only $225 a month before this cut?

That isn’t much. But given how small their paychecks are anyway, it means a lot to the families who, by the way, do incur extra expenses when their Soldiers are deployed.

(Try sending a care package to a Soldier in Afghanistan. It isn’t cheap.)

Now, thanks to you people, the families of currently (and soon-to-be) deployed Soldiers are looking at a sudden, unannounced and dramatic drop in the size of their paychecks.

But the way this rule is written, no matter how bad their finances may get, nobody at home is going to want to find extra money in those pay packets.

You probably don’t realize this, but Soldiers don’t TELL their families at home about the dangers they face. IT MAKES US WORRY MORE.

Now, thanks to you, at-home spouses will be able to easily calculate, at $7.50 per day, how many times their loved ones almost got injured or dead.

Oh yeah. That’s really going to boost morale.

Did anyone in Congress give a moment’s thought to the absurd amount of extra book-keeping this offensive regulation will require?  Before this, the checks got cut the same for each month.

Now, people who are close enough to the action to know what individual Soldiers are doing on a day-to-day basis will have to be assigned to calculate how many hazard days each Soldier qualified for each month and submit those numbers to the payroll people back home.

And the number of those payroll people back home will no doubt have to be increased substantially in order to handle the mountain of extra work involved in individually calculating and cutting tens of thousands of paychecks whose amounts will now vary month to month.

Oh yeah. That’s really going to save money.

We are currently enduring our seventh and eighth kids-in-a-war-zone experience. One of our uniformed offspring was nearly vaporized by an enormous Vehicle-Borne IED. Only the rapid response by our guys to the truck’s erratic behavior saved hundreds of lives.

But the way we read these new regs, our kid and the rest of the Soldiers who were there that day would not qualify for even one day of danger pay for this incident, because there was no HOSTILE fire.

The only bullets flying were the ones that stopped the truck and forced the driver out before he could arm the bomb.

That truck contained SEVEN TIMES the amount of explosives Timothy McVeigh used. We were so shook up when we learned about this event that we couldn’t even speak for three days.

What an insult that such a traumatic event does not even qualify for a measly $7.50 hazard pay under this new regulation. Is this part of that compassion and respect for our vets that President Obama enjoins on us?

Speaking of the Commander-in-Chief, we notice he and his “I’m all about military family support” wife recently returned from yet another multi-million dollar vacation.

Funny how we didn’t hear her raise any concern about how this new regulation would impact military families. Maybe she was too busy working out every morning so she could do faux push-ups on television with Ellen DeGeneres.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party leadership in Congress is flatly refusing to bring any bills before the Senate that would limit non-military federal spending in any way.

Polite words fail us.

OK,CHRISSY:HERE’S THE STORY

When I was about 23 my sister and her roommate(cute,as I recall)decided to have a Halloween party.The caveat was men had to be dressed as women and vice versa.Frankly,I never wanted my vice versa.I wanted to use one of my mom’s dresses(she was a big woman) but she talked me into putting on one of my sister’s dresses.She borrowed a wig from her neighbor and gave me one of her bras with the…uh… ‘foam rubber enhancements’.I think they were called “falsies.” I put on a pair of sis’ pantyhose,but they only came up to the top of my thighs so I had to keep reaching down to yank them up.Why did people give me funny looks when I did that?I was driving a 1971 Barracuda with vinyl seats and tried driving without sitting all the way down because they were cold as hell.

There I was,smoking cigars and shooting pool trying to look as macho as possible under the circumstances.It’s really a challenge to play nineball with foam rubber missiles always in your way.Anyway,sis’ neighbor staggers in not in costume,and starts watching me.As my grandma would put it,he was so drunk he didn’t know if he was afoot or horseback.Finally,he came over and said, ‘who are you,sweetheart?’

I told him I was twice the man he’ll ever be and more woman than he’ll ever get.I decided it would be better to leave the party early than to have this creep wake up the next morning thinking a girl beat his ass.Although I still appreciate a beautiful woman in heels,that was my first and only foray into the twisted world of crossdressing.That’s it.True story.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the United States Constitution:

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.”

The power to tax and spend is essential to the administering of government.

Taxing and spending require that Congress pass a budget.

The federal government’s fiscal year begins on October 1st.

The House and Senate Budget Committees are supposed to begin consideration of the up-coming year’s budget in February and submit a budget resolution by April 1.

If Congress fails to pass a budget the President is willing to sign before October 1st, the federal government is not supposed to continue functioning.

The DEMOCRAT-MAJORITY Senate has refused for nearly THREE YEARS to pass a budget, forcing Congress and the President to squabble repeatedly over short-term temporary budget resolutions to keep the government functioning.

While refusing to do their most important job, Democrat Senate leaders have continued to collect their six figure annual salaries and accrue seniority toward their very handsome retirement plans.

These same Senate Democrats absurdly blame their failure to pass a budget on Republicans.

I don’t think Newt’s accusers ever apologized or returned the fine he paid just to shut them up so Congress could get some work done for the people who elected them.

Besides trying to inform,entertain and maybe make you laugh,one of the things I enjoy about posting here is reading about what you think.I’m assuming there are few if any other men on this board and I was surprised at the reaction you had to Marianne Gingrich grousing about the woman who stole the man she stole from his first wife.

I married my first wife when I was 24 and she was pregnant.That’s how it was done back then.I thought I could get along with anyone,but she was as immature as I was.

It was about five years after my divorce that I met my second wife who was 10 years my junior with a three year old boy.She worked two days a week as a nurse and I worked a full time job and delivered pizzas on weekends to give her whatever she wanted.She convinced me to legally adopt her son after about 7 years of marriage because her ex was a deadbeat dad.

Unbeknownst to me she hooked up with a guy from our church who was even lazier and more worthless than she was.She convinced a judge her son was afraid of me,although I never went anywhere without him.I paid 25% of my income for 6 years,and haven’t seen him since 1992.He’ll be 31 on March 5.

My fishing partner’s wife had a best friend they introduced me to 18 years ago and we’ve been together since.We were in our 40’s and had no illusions about how hard a relationship could be.We’ve had disagreements,to be sure,but to my knowledge we’ve never had a serious fight.She claims one of the reasons she married me was because I made her laugh.It must be true because after 18 years she doesn’t laugh when I take my clothes off anymore.

She has a son and a daughter she raised for many years after her ex walked out on them.Her daughter tries to keep in touch for holidays and birthdays,but my stepson will have nothing to do with him for any reason.I’m the only grandpa their kids know.

My stepson has a daughter,16 and a son,14 and you already know about Miss Isabel and Miss Olivia,who are my stepdaughter’s little gifts from God.

In Romans Jesus said ‘all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.’ None of us are perfect and sometimes you have to try more than once to get it right.That’s why I can’t be too judgemental of Newt.Christians aren’t perfect,but we are forgiven.

Our soldiers are our on-the-ground ambassadors and representatives abroad, we can’t have that kind of behavior, they were wrong, and they should be punished internally. But this was an isolated incident, so unless you’ve witnessed the horrors of the battlefield while fighting a vicious enemy, you have no room to talk.
